Ruger 350 Ranch

Went to a friends birthday party yesterday . He has a great wife , beautiful and giving . She gave him a Ruger American Ranch in 350 for his birthday . It has a 16* barrel .

He called me today and told me he shot a cloverleaf group with it at 100 yards . He says it has no recoil . The only thing he didn't like about it was the plastic stock , so he ordered a Boyd's today . I didn't think the stock was that bad for a plastic stock .

He is taking it black bear hunting this weekend .

What bullets is he using for bear? Wondering because there are not too many factory loading yet and was curious what his choice will be.

My son bought a Ruger American in 6.5 & complained about the cheap stock. He filled it in with some fiberglass I think to stiffen it up. My other son wants a .350 on the Browning action. Don't know why because he can use my .351 anytime he wants to as long as he takes care of it.

I asked him what ammo he was using and all he said was Winchester 180gr. .

I am intrigued by the 350 Legend cartridge but only as an AR-15 cartridge. I would be more intrigued if I didn't already own a 450 Bushmaster and a 30 cal suppressor for my 300BO's. A 350 legend in an AR-15 and a suitable 9mm suppressor could a be a useful and flexible combination. In a bolt gun I am not sure I see much utility unless stuck in a straight wall only state.

The only quarrel I have with the 350 legend is Winchester’s ridiculous claims. It seems like a nice cartridge, like a modern day 351. But the claim that it is ballistically superior to 30-30 in terms of drop and ‘energy’ is ridiculous. Even if you go on their website the load they use for 30-30 is the most anemic thing I’ve ever seen. I don’t think I’ve seen a factory load that weak.

Winchester’s OWN factory load has 1000 foot pounds at 200 yards! And now with this new cartridge they’re using a special weak load with only 790 foot pounds so they can gloat about the 350. And the .30 cal will definitely have a better Bc to boot if they gave it a reasonably efficient bullet unlike in the comparison.

I was actually at a shoot today where one of the sea sweets for Winchester was there and I told him this exact thing.

Sorry for the rant. I love the straight wall cartridge, and I love the ranch rifle. I just don’t like shady claims

Winchester/hogdons load data is weak for many calibers. My beef with the 350 legend is that they didn't use the 223 case as a parent. I don't want special brass, i want easily converted, readily available brass.

Agreed. 5.56 brass with .357 mag bores. Instead, we gotgproprietary brass with 9mm Luger bores.

I don't get it. But then again, I'm not the target demographic.

But, I do think those little Ruger Americans are great shooters.

223 wouldn't have been easily converted anyway, it would have required fire forming or a special tapered mandrel to remove the case taper, but I digress.

Unless you run un formed Starline brass. That's just trim to length and resize per normal.

I'd probably run properly stamped brass, but if it becomes unobtanium it's nice to know I'm not up the creek without a paddle. Even if it takes some work.

I just with they had formalized the 357 ar max like they did the blackout instead of trying whatever they did with the legend.

350 legend brass is half the cost of 223 basic. Buy 500 and never worry again. And you get a better cartridge because it’s tapered and longer and more case capacity.

Tapered cases suck to reload. 9mm, 30 carbine, they require case lube. Who wants an extra step, blegh.

They do have the ballistic charts on their website though, if one wanted to seek out the truth.

I had thought about this years ago and even opened up a few .223 cases to hold them. Obviously never had a barrel to fireform or “blow out” the cases. It can be done but I wouldn’t call it easy. Wouldn’t take but a few more steps with special expanders to make it less work though.
