Totally hypothetical just because.

In, say a GP100 with a 3" barrel in each instance.

All opinions/POVs welcome.

More is better. That can apply to the number of rounds available OR to the size of the hole created. Therefore IMHO either would be a good choice assuming you can shoot both equally well.

My vote would be .44 special all day long. There was a reason it was Elmer Keith's favorite. It is a proven cartridge on game and offers a lot of flexibility for different applications.

Several choices of 200+ grain bullets getting near 1,000 fps depending on powders and bullet weight. Knockdown power and meplat vs. .38 special +p is hard to even argue let alone compare.

It just comes down to your capacity question. It isn't a lot different than asking someone if they would rather have 9 rounds of .380 vs 7 rounds of .45 acp. Is this for carry, home defense or just for fun? I am curious about that but it is hard to argue with a bigger hole and a heavier round if your intent is to stop someone with your first shot. They learned that lesson the hard way with the moros in the Phillipines.

If you reload 44spc, if not 38spc, 44spc rounds are pricey last I looked, about 2 times 38spc. I reload 44mag and have seen fired brass for 44spc run more than 44mag brass.

Purrrrrrrrrrrty! :D

44 with my Charter Arms for 5 then my Ruger and S&W for 6. I made the decision when I bought ammo now I reload and the decision is easier.

in a Gp100 it would depend upon the purpose. defense against human critters the 7 rounds of .38spl. defense against woodland critters, 5 rounds of hot loaded .44spl.

I'm a fan of shooting lighter loads, feel I'm more accurate with them and enjoy shooting them more. for what it is worth
