Transporting a firearm in NY state.

First, after you see the elk (a great experience in my opinion) in Benezette, you should check out Kinzua Bridge State Park neat Mt. Jewett, maybe look at the night sky at Cherry Springs State Park. See if you can stay at a hotel/motel in north central PA that would let you leave the gun in a safe while you go out to the falls, and come back to PA and pick it back up?
How is the elk viewing? I saw them about 17yrs ago. What’s the significance of those two parks you mentioned? Thanks for the advice we are definitely looking for stuff to do.

I live in NY. I don't even bother with pistols here. Such a pain. Bringing one here has felony written all over it. You'll enjoy Niagara Falls. I did. Shame you can't drive across the border. Not much of a problem carrying rifles or shotguns in NY. Same rules pretty much as everywhere. No permit, license or other special paperwork for long arms. However there are laws on mags and cosmetic features. Keep these away. Just not worth it. Outside of the big cities, crime is pretty low. The fall colors are great this year.

We just got back from New York. We visited the 911 Memorial, Cooperstown and then spent a couple of days in Niagara Falls. We went unarmed because we didn't want to deal with their BS. My wife seemed more worried than I did. After we got home she said " I don't want to do that again". Crazy laws and felonies are not worth the headaches that they bring. Go on your trip and have a good time and get out of there as quick as you can.

Although not in the same league as Niagra, PA has many beautiful smaller falls. I saw some if then while living in NE PA.

I saw rearrange your trip to stay in PA for peace of mind

Like I said, if you stay out of the bigger cities your not going to have any issues at all. Hoped you enjoyed Cooperstown. Its about an hour from the house. My dad put the security system in the baseball hall of fame some years back. Very pretty this time of year. Yes the laws are stupid. But most of the state is rural and we enjoy the visitors. Just don't bring your pistols I guess.

NYC is one of the safest, not even on the list of 25 highest crime cities. Stay out of the Bronx and you will not need a gun.

I served as a LEO there for 40 years and feel no need to carry most places there. Have a hard time understanding this fear of not carrying everywhere.

As a retired LEO I have the ability to carry anywhere I travel in the US, but almost never do.

As a former resident of NYC I agree that it is safer than most people think.

That being said, back when I was 21 years old I got mugged at gun point on the G train in broad daylight with other passengers on the train. So if given the option I would carry if visiting the city.

I also agree with you that I don't feel the need to be constantly carrying here in FL.

I seem to remember a case where a person traveled by plane, had a gun in his stored luggage. all approved locked up and all that. Had a change over in NY. Ge missed the connecting flight for some reason. Or it was the airlines fault. They put him up in a Hotel and yep somehow he got arrested for having the gun. Don't know the details.

Just go on a vacation, millions of people do survive with out a concealed handgun. I went to the Dr office and a Hospital yesterday without one and I am still here.:)

I agree with you about NYC being very safe these days. I also have a hard time understanding the paranoia of going unarmed for even a short period of time. Going to the 9/11 memorial, Cooperstown and Niagara Falls unarmed would not elicit a feeling that i was barely escaping with my life

Just curious, how long ago was it that you got mugged, and where? The G train used to start/terminate in Forest Hills Queens, and traveled into Brooklyn, which is definitely not what it used to be. Unique line in that it doesn't transit Manhattan.

Used to be the GG, which indicated a local, rather than express line. They dropped the double letters some time back.

Please see the Second Circuit's decision in Torraco and Winstanley v Port Authority of NY and NJ. It's a civil case where the court held that the plaintiffs could prevail in a civil suit for violation of the FOPA.

All I said was "arrested" not the eventual outcome. Arrested in 2004 and decided in 2010. Who wants to go through all that crap?

Another former resident. Compared to the 60s and 70s, NYC is very safe. My dad was NYPD from the 50s through the 80s. While the Bronx, Spanish Harlem and East NY are still bad, the bad parts of Brooklyn have become "gentrified" by the urban young folks who can't afford Manhattan. And as others have said, upstate NY is 180 degrees from the NYC/LI area just as Eureka CA isn't close to what SF is.

That was during the winter of 93 or 94, cause I remember having a heavy jacket on. I was taking the G from school in downtown Brooklyn back home in Greenpoint/Williamsburg.

One guy sat on my left and the other across from me. The later pulled what I think was a S&W 36. I stayed nice and quiet but asked to keep my wallet, and luckily they didn't want it. They ended up with about 7 bucks and some subway tokens.
