What do you eat while deer hunting

I used to be out all day, in place before sunrise, and out at dusk, on the ground with my back against a tree. Cold climate, Catskill Mts. in upstate NY, so I wanted something to provide calories for heat. Some peanut butter and preserve sammys with a substantial bread to hold up to the moisture.

A couple of Baby Ruth's or Snicker's for snacks and an old fashioned glass vacuum thermos with coffee. Stainless is nice, but nothing, to me, beats the heat retention of the old thermos's. And a few instant heat packs. No, I didn't eat them, for my hands. lol

Venison jerky.

If out all day in cold weather, a large "Tobler" or "Cadbury" chocolate bar.

Around midday, I'll build a fire and make strong black tea in my canteen cup. Then an MRE while the fire is warming me up, and I'm good to go.:)

Apples, oranges, banannas, bananna chips (dried) mixed nuts, the list of goodies is endless.

To me, the most important thing is a good hot meal at midday. MREs and freeze dried foods are convenient, but a small fire will cook almost anything. You're limited only by your imagination. Chili or stew heated in a jar placed in boiling water are among my favorites. Spam is quick and easy to fry up.

I really miss the old MilSurp "C" rations.

A decent meal at midday, an hour long nap beside the fire, and you're ready for anything.:)

Just got back from elk camp. Breakfast every day was corn beef hash, coffee, and eggs.

Regular snack between morning and evening hunts is always Chicken in a Biscuit and Easy Cheese, lol...

But the food that goes in my pack to snack on during the day are a couple of varieties of granola bars. Usually Cliff bars and the cheap Sam's Choice nut bars, and a couple of pouches of jerky, and either an apple or a pear. Try to pack a sandwich as well.

Reading this thread inspires me to do better. I ALWAYS think I’m going to bring something, but when it’s time to head to the woods I’m so focused on remembering the various implements of hunting that I completely forget to bring any food until I get crazy hungry a few hours into hunting. Except cheerwine. No north carolinian goes afield without cheerwine. Or in my case diet cheerwine.

Never candy...don`t need sugar spike. Never Beer. Water. Any kind of snack, Fried Chicken. Trail mix. Little cans of beans. Always boiled eggs.
Energy Bars.
And always bring my trash out with me. Baggies for that.
Have been on an archery hunt now for the past 4 days. The above is what I take .
All or some it all depends,
It`s now about 3 am. 3:30 am......I`m out the door.

I’m eating high on the hog for tomorrow’s mule deer hunt, a pork sausage MRE left over from fire season.

I usually spend all day on the mountain.

Man, some of you guys eat well out on the hunt. I grew up hunting, even when we were out all day we never had a warm meal. Usually just turkey sandwiches, a bag of chips and water back at the truck. The treats were oatmeal cream pies and vienna sausages. Only thing warm was a thermos of coffee (started drinking it when I was 14). I'm young still (36), but after 20+ years of hunting I just discovered the amazing gift of "hot hands" or hand warmers while out for a hunt.

I've never used a blind or a tree stand so don't usually carry much in with me and try not to make much of a stir, whether sitting or still hunting. But a midday retreat to the truck and a warm meal is an idea worth considering.

My set up so far this archery season has been a peanut butter and banana sandwich for breakfast with coffee. Then almonds and water while in the woods. Coffee and a sandwich back at the truck for lunch. I'm simple and consistent, I don't mind monotony. I've got a lot of ideas to work with though, thanks for the input. I hadn't even considered bringing my MSR burner to heat up MRE, or anything else. Here's to hunting with a warm, full belly and staying in the woods longer! Good luck this season.

Spent this weekend at deer camp.
We didn't kill anything, but we ate good.

We had these cooked medium rare with a big pile of fried potatoes with onions.
If I've ever had a better meal, I don't remember it.
