Went to Cabelas to buy some lead balls for a cap and ball test and happened into the gun library. They had several Smith Model 37s for pretty good prices, including one for $350 which I almost got. Then I saw this Taurus PT101AF and after a few minutes walking around and trying to talk myself out of it I asked the dude to open the case. All the guns now have to have trigger locks on them, and if you want to try the trigger they make you go into the back office and point it into a bullet trap.

RIDICULOUS. But it functioned as intended, despite being totally dry. After points it cost me $189 out the door with the OEM box and one mec gar mag.

Disassembled pics are as I got it; assembled pics are post lube so there may be some oil and grease spots. There’s a tiny bit of blue wear on the front lower left edge of the polished slide flat but otherwise it looks like someone bought it in around 1992 and left it in a drawer. Grip screws are untouched, minimal to no internal wear. I’d wager it hasn’t been fired outside the factory.
Anyway I have the “stainless” version and a couple mags so now it has a brother. FYI Beretta uppers will actually swap on these and function, even with the redundant slide mounted Beretta safety.

Range report to follow.
Ugh I have no idea why the forum software flips all the images. Anyway you get the idea

When I decided to get back into shooting a few years ago the first gun I bought was found used on Gun Broker. it is a Taurus PT 92C and I paid $250.00 for it. To this day it is still one of the nicest shooting guns I own and it goes with me every trip to the range. It is also the one in my sig.

I'm surprised they let you even try it with a bullet trap.

I got yelled at by a manager at a Bass Pro shop as a customer... I kid you not... Because I convinced the counter guy to let me use the "bullet trap method" to test the trigger on a gun I wanted to buy. Needless to say, I didn't spend my money there.

Congrats on the buy... I really want a "Beretta" gun and I'm constantly tempted by the Taurus and Zenith and Girsan options as well

Holy cow, what a deal. I'm holding out for Beretta 92X Performance, which also has a frame-mounted safety, but this would sway me. Good thing the local Cabelas is on the other side of the city from me.

I asked them about this new Bass Pro policy and he said they’d softened a bit because apparently they weren’t selling many guns. Well duh... you going to buy a car they won’t let you start or drive?

Yeah I understand being handcuffed by a policy, as dumb as a policy can be. But it was the fact that the manager scolded me, that made me mad. I left before I made a scene cuz I was pretty mad being talked at like that. Regardless, I went on strike with them for a while... But it the end, I only buy sale ammo off them since that's the only thing they are competitive with.

But I agree, if I can't "test drive" a model, or then function test my firearm, I'm not buying it.

I had the Cabela's across town tell me: "you can test it when you get home" with much snark, when I asked about trying a gun before I buy. Again, same day as the Bass Pro debacle. My fault for being in a retail store on a weekend, and I'm sure the employees get sick of explaining it to every customer for every firearm sale.

BP ruined Cabela’s, unfortunately. The last time I was in Cabela’s 11 months ago they didn’t have a bullet trap and wouldn’t unlock the gun I was very interested in. I showed the man my wallet and said “This has a lock too” and stuck it in my pocket and walked out of the Gun Library.

Nice deal on that Taurus, though. That is a good looking pistol.

Lol “this has a lock too.” :D

Used to have a PT92. It was a great gun. I too liked the frame mounted safety.

Congratulations. I've been holding on getting one. The Beretta was my primary carry sidearm and primary qualification weapon in my past life. Love the all metal construction and the capacity. I've heard great things about the Taurus models. Maybe next year. Congratulations again and thanks for the pics.

One interesting thing is the new 13-round mec gar mags I got won’t insert into the frame fully loaded. Well, they will, but there is obvious friction interference and they have to be ripped out. With 11 there’s just a little and with 10 there’s none. With factory mags I have no issues. I guess I’ll shoot it in IDPA SSP.

first time a mec gar product has been less than stellar.
