Hello everybody, this is my first time posting on a forum, however I have read quite a few. I am trying to put together a 1000 yard 7mm-08(because that's the caliber I want). I'd prefer to buy a complete gun, less the scope, but im somewhat open to building one if I have to because the trouble is finding a 24" barrel(I know 22" will work) with maybe a little bit more meat than a sporter contour. Not looking for a bench gun but something with a little heft that I can still carry to blind on a rare occasion or set on a bipod for varmints in the warmer months. Anyway any help is appreciated with who might make such a thing factory or ideas on who to build from on a budget. Thanks.

If you can find one of the Remington 700 Varmint rifles in 7/08 it will be about perfect for your wants. When Remington introduced the 7/08 in 1980 they figured it would be well received by silhouette shooters (In fact a Remngton executive at that time was much involved in silhouette competition and was instrumental in adopting the cartridge.). Which was the reason for early on listing the 7/08 with a varmint weight barrel. It did for a short while have some popularity with silhouette shooters until replaced by the .260 Rem. I was into silhouette shooting at the time and bought the rifle shown here, but also put it aside for the easier to shoot .260. But for your listed descriptions and purposes this would be the near ideal rifle...if you can find one. DSC_0151.JPG DSC_0136.JPG DSC_0142.JPG

I would follow Offhand's suggestion and maybe find yourself a lightly used Remington 700 series rifle ready to go less the optics or with optics and change to suit what you want. Rolling your own is not all that simple unless you are tooled up for the task. Just about any of the following barrel makers can give you a blank 7mm barrel, Benchmark Barrels. Broughton Barrels. Brux Barrels. Criterion Barrels. Douglas Barrels. Hart Barrels. Krieger Barrels and there are more. Once you have a blank it needs chambered and threaded and then finished and fitted to the action. You can easily start looking at a large pile of money. You can have about any length you want. You can also look to buy a barrel threaded and short chambered for about any action of your choice.

Again, unless you are familiar with all of this stuff the simple solution is buy a rifle ready to roll and if you want accuracy start rolling your own 7mm-08 ammunition. I have loaded quite a bit 7mm-08 Remington just necking down 7.62 X 51 (.308 Winchester) brass. Works fine and I never had a need to neck turn.

Offhand, real fine looking rifle there. :)

https://www.eabco.net/Shaw-Savage-B...-Contour-195-Twist--24-Stainless_p_15607.html Here you go. Might look into a Savage M 110 (long action) donor. You'll have a little more leeway to run match bullets out long and increase your powder capacity slightly. I don't know the in's and outs of building a rifle on a Savage action, but I think this barrel will work on those models also.

If you find a good enough deal on a donor, this wouldn't be a super expensive build even if you have gunsmith installation done.

Thanks everybody for the input, i guess my soft limit is about $1000 for a rifle without a scope. I really like Random 8's option of the heavy Shaw barrel on a savage action. I've looked into a bit and found some nice stocks from Boyd's. My issue is I can't find one for the M110 thats made for a DM and a bull barrel so I think I would either have to buy one for a DM and hone out the stock or go to the M 10 which they make a bull barrel DM stock for but would limit me to short action. So is magazine length and feed ramp location the only 2 things that might hamper my ability to load bullets out longer in a short action?? I took some measurements on my wife's M10. 243 and the mag has a length capacity of 3.120" and I put my 7mm-08 cartridge in the mag and it seems as though I should be able to gain another, .20-.25" of length from the standard 2.800"oal. What do you guys think? How long could I practically load bullets for this round anyway? I don't want to severely limit myself on reload capabilites but another bonus of the short action is that my wife would like a new stock for her 243 so I'd just buy one with her desired stock and take the action for myself. And yes 2ndtimer I have a ton of brass and all the components for reloading 7mm-08, have been shooting it for years and am curious to see what I can do with it.

Look into Richards Microfit, they will cut a barrel channel to fit for a modest add-on. Just expect at least 6 weeks for delivery. Your short action may be long enough. I was going off the general wisdom that this cartridge is hampered by some of the short magazine wells built for it. Your Savage M10 may not have this issue. Hopefully someone more familiar with your round loaded long can chime in.

With a mag that long you'd be limited by how long your throat is. There is .040" of extra length in the mag.

driptrHrd,
He’s not shooting deer, or planning on using factory ammo.
1,000yd bullseyes, metal plates, or varmints.

BIG difference!!!

What he actually needs as a “starter” gun is a Savage Chasis Gun in 6mm Creedmoor. Least expensive way to get into a long range “shooter”.

I have a Rem Mod-7. Probably my favorite deer rifle. However, it’s a LONG WAYS from being a 1,000yd paper-puncher or gong-ringer! 2moa at best! But it’s a game killer extraordinaire! To maybe 300yds. or perhaps a bit more...

check out the Savage M110 Elite Precision. 7mm08 isn’t an option. I suggest the 6mmCreedmoor.

it’s a bandwagon cartridge but in 6.5cm you have a lot more good choices of rifles that meet your specs, the industry has gotten fully behind the cartridge.
Bergara has some nice offerings and the Tikka varmint models are also nice.
You can get a really good savage profit for abound $350, if possible look at Greyboe stocks or KRG chassis, they make some nice stuff that is better than the b&c

SnipersHide has a large and active for sale section and you can piece some stuff together really affordably

tikka and bergara would be my brands of choice, followed by Remington and savage, just because you can work with Remington easier than savage these days (remage barrels and every accessory you can imagine)
