I have a Savage model 99 in 30-30 that I would like to rebarrel. The current barrel looks like a sewer pipe. I live in Lewiston Idaho. Does anyone know of someone in the western states that has or would fit a new barrel to the action. Thanks.

Jaysouth asks the key question. Just because it looks bad doesn't mean it won't shoot.

If it doesn't shoot, another option is 35-30/30, which is just the 30-30 necked up to 35 cal. Jesse Occumpagh, JES Rebore (35caliber.com) will rechamber and and bore it out to .358" You basically get 200 grs at 170 grs velocities.

Worth consideration.

Welcome to THR. A "sewer pipe" bore can be caused by a couple things. Rust and corrosion is one. Or someone just never cleaning it causing a build up of fouling. If you didn't I'd give it a good cleaning. You can swab the bore with a good solvent and let it set over night and give it a fresh swab for a couple days and see if it cleans up. Or plug the bore, stand it muzzle down and fill it with solvent for a week. Then give it a gentle scrubbing. I don't know how old the gun is but early ones have a softer steel and over scrubbing could damage a good bore. Let the solvent do the work. Then try shooting it. Even really crappy looking bores can be surprisingly accurate. I've learned that with old milsurps. Good luck.
