I am about to make a trade with my brother that will involve a Ruger 10/22. I have had two of them in the last 20 years, one stock, one customized. They were both fine shooters, but for whatever reason I've just never really cottoned to them. We're on our third Marlin model 60 these days, going back over roughly the same time frame, and all of those guns (the first one got broken by a careless user) have been great shooters. One in particular is my go to for critter dispatching. I just like the feel of it in my hands, and they've been proven when needed. I know the Ruger has a higher potential capacity and, yeah it's fun, but I don't reach for it in times of need. Intrested in opinions from the group, as well as experiences, anecdotes. Cheers!

Edit: Since I'm sure this has been covered millions of times, feel free to include your .22 of choice.

i was the same way about the 10-22 and after owning three of them I went to the marlin model 60 blued/wood I really liked it! so for me the marlin 60 is my favorite! I just went up the scale and last Tuesday I got the Remington model 572 fieldmaster and wow what a gun its super sweet and high gloss wood and smooth action but it's not cheap but very nice and accurate! :)

10/22 never grew on me either. Had one, didn't like the magazine or its release and the bolt hold open thing or the looks. Put mine into a tapco stock and hated it even more. A buddy of mine saw it and fell in love, sold it to him for more than it was worth.

Had a marlin 60, it was a gem
Loved it. Sadly after almost 10 years the guy i borrowed it from was moving and wanted it back and wouldn't sell it.

I'm not in to semiauto 22 rifles, just dumping them out as fast as possible does nothing for me anymore. Marlin 39 - best 22 rifle in history. If you aren't familiar with it just buy one, you can't go wrong.

Have not seen the model 25 bolt ( or 39), I'll have to look in to them. I like the SA for quick follow up shots if needed. Keep 'em coming!

Edit: I also have a PC Carbine in 9mm that I plan to keep for life. It feels like an overgrown 10/22, but better.

IMG_20191019_193358.jpg I bought a 10/22 not to long ago. Just don't like the feel. So I'm trading it for something else. Had a model 60. Thing was scary accurate. Taught my wife to shoot with it. Still have the quarter she shot. Next 60 I run across will take the 10/22s place. Looking for a older one. Edit found the quarter. Shot 25 paces 11.5 size shoe, off hand. First time ever firing a weapon. And she hit it first shot.

This is kind of the Coke vs Pepsi of the rimfire world, but I am partial to the 10/22. Model 60s shoot better IME but I like the fat 10/22 stock.

My "take a third option" would probably be the Mossberg Plinkster. Definitely a cheapo, but they're very light and I like the sights.

They both work great and shoot great in my opinion.

My 10-22 seemed to need a little TLC polishing to make it reliable with Federal blue box ammo, but is now very reliable.
The 10-22 sights are copies of Williams sights, but are made of steel instead of aluminum. Very good.
Fit and finish is very good. No parts breakages after about 400 rounds.

The 1980s model 60 that I had chugged through a brick of Super X with zero malfunctions right out of the box.
The sights were okay. Fit and finish was also very good.
However, about 200 rounds in, I noticed that the plastic pin which holds the trigger group in place had sheared in two.
I replaced it with an aluminum one cut from a .30 caliber cleaning rod section.
Also, after 450 rounds, the plastic bolt buffer broke (same kind of plastic).
I replaced it with one carved out of a chunk of fairly hard rubber.
These were fairly small problems.
Maybe they use better plastic now, but the pin should have been steel or aluminum, and the buffer should have been made of a more resilient material.

Yeah, a Marlin 39 feels like a real rifle in your hands.

The Winchester 94-.22 was also a great .22 lever action. All steel, first class walnut stocks, very reliable, and available in the XTR machine cut checkered version. I never see them any more. :(

I have been thinking about getting a Marlin 60.

I have a 10/22 that I have had for 25 years now. It still shoots great with no parts replacement except the bolt stop. I installed a nylon one years ago. It still works and is in good shape. I also replaced the sights. Hate the fiber optic. Gonna have to replace that thing.
I also have a Henry AR7 and a Savage 30 Stevens Favorite.

I have fired many Marlin 60s. They have all been accurate and they fit me. I think it’s time I had my own.

Agree with Coke V Pepsi, just like to see the discussion be civil!

So I've fired over 1000 rounds out of one of my model 60's with no issue and minimal cleaning. I find them to be more accurate out of the box than the 10/22. @Old Stumpy, maybe the newer ones had better qc? I'll be on the lookout anyway, thanks.

BTW, my man skills are talking s and eating biscuits.... (motorpool) hope you like black coffee!

I don't think that this was the issue. QC was fine.
It was simply that the plastic used to make the pin and buffer was a bad choice. If you have not had these break by now, then they must have corrected that issue long ago.

The 10/22 & the Marlin Model 60 are two of what I call the 'standard issue' .22s. It seems like just about every boy in rural America is "issued" one of those two between the ages of 8 and 14. I got my 10/22 at about age 12 and it's one of my all-time favorite guns. In fact, I just got new rings for the scope, so I'm hoping to go re-zero it again today. With all of that said, there's certainly nothing wrong with the Marlin. There's a perfectly good reason it's one of the 'standard issue' .22s. If you like it better than the 10/22, go with it.

I have and like both.

The build quality on a 10-22 is worlds better with a better trigger, better sights, better magazine system, ect... In my experience they are typically gopher at 40 yards accurate, but the old saying that the marlin is more accurate is true in my case. My model 60 is very accurate but they are also very cheaply made. Mine is picky on what ammo it will feed too.

The 10-22 will be shooting long after the Marlin 60 is worn out. With either gun the magazine is the weak link. The tube mags will eventually wear out from use and the cost to repair could easily exceed the value of the rifle. The Ruger mags are among the best, and if one goes bad toss it in the trash, replacements are everywhere and cheap.

Accuracy wise the Marlin has been pretty consistent over the years. Ruger has been inconsistent, some are every bit as accurate as any Marlin, some not. In my experience Rugers made within the last 10-15 years are pretty good.

That said I wouldn't have a standard Ruger carbine as a gift. But the good news is that they currently show 64 variants of the 10-22 on Rugers website.

I like the sporter versions, especially this.

Have had a 10/22 going on 40+ years while a fiend of mine has had a Model 60 for nearly the same amount of time. My 10/22 has been trouble free and incredibly durable from Day 1 and is amazingly accurate to boot! My friend's rifle has had the occasional feeding problem and he has never been a fan of loading the magazine tube. Accuracy has been average though I don't think he ever did a lot of ammo testing to see what his rifle preferred.

I have owned many of both rifles. I prefer the tube fed rifles so I would prefer a 60 over the 10/22. My personal preference is one of my Henry lever actions though. I do have a Ruger American that is threaded for a suppressor and I keep that combo of the back porch for squirrels and what ever other critters come into my yard.

Someone mentioned the sights...

I mounted a Williams receiver peep on both of my Marlins (the Model 60, and my single-shot Model 15) and I'm happy as a clam now. Never been much of a scope guy, and I even bought a nice Simmons 22MAG scope for the 15... which is just gathering dust on the shelf now that I have the peeps.

I have TechSights on my 10/22... I set the rifle up for my daughter to shoot an Appleseed with. They are hunky looking, but they work very, very well as intended. I even bought a takeoff stock and bushwhacked 1" off the stock to match her pull length (although that was some years ago, and I don't think she needs it any longer.)

Someone also mentioned the Winchester... I traded for a Winchester 9422 some years ago, as a gift for my then newborn nephew. Like all good uncles, I had to test fire it for a few years... it was a right handy little rifle. It did not have the accuracy of my Marlins, but that may have been my ammo choice, too. I have always lusted for a Marlin 39... just haven't gone there, yet.

I like my 10-22 that I have had over 30 years. I can hit 1" pasters at 50 yards with it. Except for a 4x scope, it is unmodified. Never saw a reason to try anything else.
