An older gent brought this and a semi refinished 8mm mouser in to my local gun store. Im having trouble finding info on it and if the mods(rear sights) were before or after import. The store had no clue on it and said they were still looking into it. Listed for 370.

Any info on it would be helpful

It is exactly what the markings say: an IJ70, a modified Makarov, and is just as it was imported.

Thanks, I noticed right after posting my wife had pictures of both sides and was able to google it. Im still trying to figure how rare it is though its Baikal marked.

I don't think its a military variant due to the sights not being "fixed" but Im finding more opinion overall instead of facts for narrowing down this particular model.

It is not a military variant, but includes features (such as the adjustable sights) which made it fit the then-current import criteria. It is still in 9mm Makarov caliber, as the military pistol is/was.

It’s not rare. The IJ-70 is the commercial variant and the sights are factory. They are probably the easiest way to identify a commercial vs military makarov. There’s nothing wrong with the commercial Makarov, but the military versions are generally preferred by most people.

The Russians imported a double stack Makarov as well which is a bit more rare, but mags are reportedly difficult to find.

And as PRD1 mentioned, the gun should be 9x18 Makarov, not 8mm Mauser. Note that there are conversion barrels (and production IJ-70’s) in .380.

$370 isn’t bad, but isn’t a great price either.

When I bought my IJ-70 in the early 1990's, they retailed for under $100. I also have Makarovs made in Bulgaria and East German. Never a single malfunction in any of them.
