Wow, added a new Sig to the collection, but not just any Sig ...

Hiya Guy's :) . I've been wanting to add another Sig to my collection for awhile now to go with my Astra A100 that's masquerading as a p227, but I didn't just want something average, so I've been keeping my eyes open for something that really piqued my interest, until now. Cause I just got home with a sexy Sig - P228 full German made double / single action 9mm with the correct triple serial markings. a date code of 2002 w/ the original zipper-back magazine, Sig night sights & the issued rubber grips. Yes, this is an Ex Swiss police service gun and bears a laser etched Swiss State Dept mark on the slide. Other then getting a complete tear down and cleaning nothing has been modified or changed on this gun from how it was imported :) .



It wasn't cheap, I ended up trading my Herstal Belgian Browning Hi Power for it. It wasn't easy but for this gem , it was worth it :) . Luckily I still have a nice Browning hi-power in my collection besides that one so it's all good. The 228 came with another standard Sig mag, a Sig extended (p226) mag, and an aftermarket +2 button mag (4 magazines total) :) .

The P228 is the best of the old SIGs, they have a cult following for a reason, congratulations! I have a pristine 1994 model.

Stock up on a small parts kit from Top Gun Supply, it contains the double roll pins for holding the breechblock in the slide.

Mec-Gar makes flush fit 15-round mags for these, I use those and keep the German zipper back mags put away.
 
Welcome to the world of real P-228s ... (don't get me wrong, I still love my M-11A1, but it's a P-229 really).

You should find it's one of easiest carrying and shooting pistols in existence.

Ditto Rubber Duck's comments. TGS is a go-to for SIG supplies, and Greg Cote is the other guy. And yeah, the Mec-Gar 15-rounders are the gold standard mags (and much less spendier than SIG-branded mags in fact).

Are you gonna keep those honkin' huge Goodyears on it, or put original grips or some wood on it?
 
Excellent choice. I have two of them, both produced in 1994. The Swiss use is very interesting.

Rubber_Duck: what is the advantage of the "flush fit mags" in Sigs? Am not familiar with the type of mags.

Good question and I concur and I was wondering the same thing about zipper back mags and myself. This came with a couple different style of magazines and I think I may have one or two of the flush fit mags he mentioned so I'll take some pictures of them and get them posted tomorrow as well as pictures of this next to my Astra A100 (Spanish P227) :)

Well the original magazine for the P228 is a 13-round magazine. The Mec-Gar mags are 15 round capacity so it makes a P228 more equal to a Glock 19 or whatever in capacity while still fitting the same in the gun. Non-flush fit mags would have an extension that sticks out past the grip to achieve more capacity but the Mec-Gars do it with an updated follower and spring design.
 
If I had to have only one of the two fine pistols under discussion (the SIG P-228 or the Browning Hi-Power) for use in self-defense, it would be the SIG-and I'd never look back. Well, maybe just a peek...:(

Self defense, I’d agree, however something tells me this particular firearm isn’t going into the edc role.
 
Hard to say, I guess. When in sketchy neighborhoods in terms of criminal activity and the attire coverage permits in terms of the weather and social circumstance, my SIG Model 227 rides along comfortably and well concealed in my Galco "King Tuk", iwb holster.

I second that notion. Have never been a fan of rubber finger groove grips as they typically are too sticky, too bulky, and tend not to fit my hand very well.
 
Thanks guys, I appreciate all the feedback, now I just have to go back and read it all :) .

On another note I think I made a really good trade and I like this P228. You can't go wrong with a hand-built, hand fitted German proofed Sig , especially one that was in service with the Swiss police. as it was pointed out I will be changing the big-ass Goodyears on it. I have big wrists and big hands and these grips are still too big and it reminds me of a 92fs in that sense. The main thing I don't like about these grits other than that is I can't comfortably hit the decocker with my thumb without slightly turning the gun sideways and I don't like that. I'll be changing them out for something nicer, smaller and more comfortable that aids my natural point, probably a nice set of wood grips or Hogues but if anyone has any other suggestions I'd like to hear them? :) ..
