Looking for a 22 Recommendation

I also have the M&P Compact. It is thus far 100% with MiniMags and I think with Aquila HV and some old Remington Golden.
Once broken in, it seems reliable with standard velocity which makes it a real popgun.
But now the new has worn off, I am back to doing most of my .22 shooting with the full size target pistols, service pistol conversions, and K22.

I have had a SR 22 since it first came out. Very reliable. Crazy weird Ruger Trigger. So much free play that it feels like he trigger spring is broke. Hate the reverse safety. I use my 22..cals as trainers. My favorite is the Phoenix HPA 22 which I have two. Very reliable, nice sights and nice trigger. Have been shooting them for over a decade. And another one of my favorite is he LCR22. Just love shooting that gun.

I recommend the Smith MP22 compact. Great gun, very reliable and great handling. The Ruger Mark IV is also superb.

I had an SR22 and liked it a lot. Very reliable and perfect plinking size. One word of caution, the safety/decocker works opposite of most guns.

Good luck

I have a Ruger Mk 1 bull barrel who is a very picky eater. I measured the OAL of ammo it likes which solved the problems.

The problem, not many let me open the box to measure; solution: I shoot whatever it doesn't like in Rem pump etc.

A friend of mine has had ammo problems with his Ruger 22/45. We thought it was a magazine issue but turns out it feeds some ammo but not all. My MK II target has the same problem. It runs CCI std. vel. all day long, Aquilla has FTF about every 5 rds. Don't ever buy 5K of Aqilla unless you have a bolt rifle. :( Fortunately I do, but it's still going to take awhile to go thru it all. I guess it's my 22 LR drought stash.

M&P 22 Compact. Eats any and all .22LR ammo, loves CCI miniI mags (of course) and is a great plinker/trainer.

I too had a Walter P22. It remains as the only gun I have ever sold. The only thing reliable about it was it’s unreliability. I traded it in for a Ruger Mark II used. Rest assured, no matter what you get, it will be an improvement over that P22.

FWIW, I am one of those rare people who doesn't like the SR22 at all. It fits my hands poorly, and I didn't like the trigger. I tried that one and several other smallish models from other manufacturers, but I didn't like any of them.

My search for a smallish 22 semiauto ended when I found a used Ruger Standard 4". I was looking something a bit smaller, but it's small and light enough to carry around in the woods easily. The trigger and accuracy are excellent. I shoot it almost as well as my Buck Mark, which has around a 6" barrel, but the Standard is far easier to carry.

I am casually shopping for an inexpensive plinker .22 pistol for my 16 year old daughter, who is just starting out.

We LOVE the look of the Beretta U22 Neos 22. However, it is apparently discontinued. Can anyone recommend an inexpensive pistol that looks very much like the Beretta Neos??

Thanks!

I can't say enough good things about the Ruger SR22. It's accurate, eats every brand of bulk ammo I feed it and is very easy to take down and clean. It's also built like a tank. For some reason it just doesn't seem to get as dirty as my MKIV's. I really enjoy shooting it and it gets shot a lot, a real lot. As a side note, it also comes with Ruger's lifetime warranty and one of the best, if not the best customer service in the gun world.

I am so surprised that no one has mentioned the Bersa Thunder 22,,,
It's a SA/DA pistol with exposed hammer and de-cocker,,,
Mine has been utterly reliable for many years now.

I know several people who have this pistol,,,
Nobody has had any problem with performance.

It's extremely easy to break down for cleaning,,,
And runs Federal bulk pack ammo very reliably.

The gun is very reminiscent of the Walther PPK in style,,,
But is definitely not a clone.

Ask anyone who owns one for a recommendation,,,
I'll bet good money they like theirs.

The Neos still shows up from time to time as NOS or used inventory if you hunt a bit. They’re a fun little pistol, nearly picked up a mint SS model last week but it was 2 miles over the State Line.

Ruger SR22, never an issue. I like it, the kids love it. The only thing that makes me not love it is the reverse safety.

It's still on their website,,,
But a fast look at some online stores,,,
None of the sites that I looked at has one in stock.

Bummer,,,
I have several,,,

Im dying to find the carbine kit locally for cheap. I bought my lightly used Neos for $250 locally. Its a fun gun, I do dislike the front sight, kinda hard to see in a dimmer indoor range. Probably going to try a cheap $50 red dot on it

Sometimes the answer to a question of choice is why choose?

My Neos with a simple TRS-25 RDS and BuckMark which got a Vortex reflex (pictured below).

I purchased two of these for my pair of NEOS pistols,,,

They come in red or green so I bought one of each,,,
I like them both and can't decide on a favorite.

Very easy to install but do need a very small allen wrench

Good luck (I'm not being sarcastic) on finding a NEOS Carbine Kit,,,
They have been discontinued for several years now.

Theres a handful on armslist, some at a good price. But none local and none that are listed that will ship

I haven't had a lot of good experiences with the service-style 22s. I bought a Sig Mosquito that is probably my worst gun purchase to date - horrible trigger, expensive ammo tastes, and still jams 5-10% of the time even on Stingers. For $400, I sure got a deal. One friend had a Walther P22 that's just like you said - jammomatic, and I was constantly ejecting the magazine by accident due to the trigger guard release thing.

A different friend though (it's great to have friends who are also gun hoarders) had a Ruger SR22, and it's probably the best one I've seen. Feels good, shoots well, and pretty cooperative with ammo. I don't think you'll go wrong there.

I have a Buckmark though, and it is literally the ideal 22LR pistol to me. It takes work to miss with that gun, and it cycles through what ever bulk-pack crap I feed it with a smile. Doesn't need cleaning or oiling either. I don't know how you could improve it. Might be a little similar to a Mark IV you already have, and the SR22 would add a little more diversity there, but even then it's hard for me to recommend a good gun over a perfect one.

I don't know if you'll find anything that looks exactly like that. It almost looks like a Buckmark that got kitbashed up for a Buck Rodgers episode.
