.308 deer load

I have a couple of loads that are accurate but I don’t really like the report or the kick. How’s the 4064 (H or IMR) for recoil with maybe a 165gr ?
IMR 4064 is going to be middle of the road to heavy recoil in a .308 depending on how hot the load is.

In my opinion, if you want less recoil you should probably look at lighter bullets. Premium controlled expansion bullets will give better penetration than an equivalent weight cup and core type.

I don't think Hodgdon markets a H4064, just the IMR brand. Accurate sells a 4064 but I have no experience with it.

Maybe something in a 150 gr ?
What’s a premium controlled expansion Bullets?

Hey everyone

ok so as not to hijack nature boys thread

I’m looking to put together a .308 deer load

bullet
150 grain Pro Hunter

powder choices
1) Varget
2) Benchmark
3) IMR 3031

once fired brass
Federal GMM LRP

so what powder would you start with???
thanks y’all

My standard deer load for decades with the .308 has been 43 grains of IMR 3031 with a 150 grain bullet. Accurate and consistent with honest 2750 fps in an 18 1/2" barrel..

There's a LOT of bullets out there that claim to be "Premium" with controlled expansion.

Of those that I have personal experience with, I've had the best results with Nosler Partitions. I have friends who swear by Barnes solid copper bullets, but I've had mixed results with them myself (I quit using them 15 + years ago, they may have gotten more consistent since).

I've had excellent accuracy with Nosler Accubond bullets, but I haven't killed enough with 'em to give a recommendation.

What are you hunting, and at what range are you likely to shoot at?

Thank you Swampman,
I’m familiar with those projectiles but for some reason I lost the term PCE in my brain,( old timers I suppose) I haven’t been out hunting in a few years I’ve always shot core loc stuff but now that I’m moving to Montana that’s changing, Mule deer, White tail, hell I’ll shoot cow Elk with a 308 no problem. For distance.. I’d have to judge the shot when I see it but the rifle is plenty accurate to 500 ish.

Additionally I’ have a very accurate load in a 155 scenar but I’m just not sure about the bullet with regards to a clean kill.

Update I have found my load

150 grain Gameking
43.00 grains of IMR 3031
Federal brass
Federal GMM LRP

that’s three shots at 100 and yes I moved the scope left I shot several groups that small so I’m sticking with it!
Looks good to me. Retest at your max range. I have had some loads that shot well at one hundred that fell apart at three hundred.
