My last challenge for the forseeable future. Just in time to break into December and Christmas. I thought about doing this challenge based on this video of top rated accurate surplus rifles. However decided whatever surplus bolt action rifle you want go ahead. I will personally be entering mostly based on this vid.

No standing classes this time, just shoot however you are most accurate and post.

THE RULES
You will fire 10 shots onto the approved target listed which for this challenge will be a SR-1 100 yd target. Scoring will be scored by adding up the score for all 10 shots. A shot touching a line counts as the next numbering up. For instance if a shot touches the line separating the 7 and 8 the score is a 8. A X counts as 10 points.

You can download the target and make copies online although however I downloaded it on a standard printer paper 8.5 x 11 inch paper from a download link provided below (thanks random) and it comes out the exact same size as a bought SR-1 target as far as bulls eye repair targets. You may use any color target or put a sticker in the center X circle if you want to help aiming as long as it fits correct. Whatever SR-1 target you get it has to have a X ring.

Allowed firearms are as follows...
Bolt action surplus rifle

There will be two classifications.

Class 1, 10 shots at 100 yds , iron sights only, benched with front rest or sand bag, bi-pod or prone position which ever way you shoot best (no rear rest allowed rifle must be shouldered)
Class 2, 10 shots at 100 yds, optics or dot sights only, benched with front rest or sand bag, bi-pod or prone position which ever way you shoot best (no rear rests allowed rifle must be shouldered)

Please include with the target submission

username
classification entered class 1 or f3IBok.jpg 2
score
firearm
ammunition
( if you want you can catalog group size also)

then take a pic of it and post it here, if you would post a pic of the firearm used as well.

You may submit as many targets as you wish provided it was shot with a different firearm. One target submission per firearm is allowed within the class . You can take as many tries that you want BEFORE you post your target but only post the target you want to submit for the final submission to the challenge.

The cutoff date for submissions is November 30 2019

Please submit targets even if you don't think they'll win as the information on how well what shoots may be valuable to other members

Good luck and good shooting

Any questions such as how to post pics or qualifying firearms, or links to possible target downloads please feel free to ask

sad to see the end of the line.

since I have a number of eligible rifles, I need to start digging for ammo to feed the odd balls, like the French M1886/93 Lebel.

I’ve been enjoying these challenges. Thanks for doing them, LK. Definitely shows areas where I can improve.

I’ve only got one milsurp bolt action, but I’ll get out and shoot some targets to submit. It’s an Enfield No. 4 Mk I. But I don’t know how well it will do. I ran a Borescope down the barrel a while back. Toward the breach end, the rifling just goes away. It’s pretty much a smoothbore, and then the rifling just gradually picks up as the bullet moves down the barrel. Skip ahead to about the 0:50 mark in the video below.

The other rifle in the video is a Yugo 59. I can see why many countries chrome lined their SKSs. Corrosive primers and bimetal bullets are not kind to bare steel barrels. I’m sure the burr on the gas tube doesn’t help either.

In any event, looking forward to making an attempt.

don't write off that No 4 - I've seen worse bores that still shot OK.

Ill probably enter a Enfield however having for of them I'm only gonna do one or two at most, and having a lot of surplus rifles not going to enter every one don't have the time to do so lol

Ok, here you go. Actually, I need to adjust for elevation a lot. I ended up putting another target below this one to aim at. And even so, I’m still getting more of a “pattern” than a group.

I may try some different ammo. Or I keep thinking I could use this as a doner rifle and get one of those .45 ACP conversions. Or maybe just rebarrel it with a new .303 barrel.

Decisions, decisions.

HXP is very good ammo, so I suspect your rifle needs attention. How sharp is the rifling? Is the action snug in the stock, or does it wiggle a bit? And yes, try a different ammo, you could have gotten a batch that was poorly stored.

I'm not an expert, but everything I have seen leads me to believe it's usually not worth it to re-barrel a No 4 - even if you can find a good barrel.

Dig around a bit, before you decide.

Thanks Merle. Rifling can be seen in the video I posted above. It’s pretty much nonexistent just in front of the chamber. Otherwise, stock is tight. Not sure what else.

well, it is heavily copper fouled and somewhat dark. I'd start with removing all (or nearly all) of the copper. yep, the rifling is pretty much toast at the chamber. Next thing I'd do is slug the bore & see what you really have, some L-E barrels varied quite a bit under wartime conditions.

If you handload, get as close to bore diameter as you can - and pay particular attention to headspace, adjust the sizing die to match your chamber.

Won't be the end of the line. I get more free time in winter. I hope to shoot this one, but then I hoped to shoot the last several as well. I work in utilities in a Northern state, and right now it's fall crunch time so we'll see. I do have 3 of the 5 video rifles, and they all shoot up to their reputation

the scope started slipping (twisting to right) after the first five rounds, so I compensated as best I could
new & better rings are required!

all in all, not too bad

greetings,

my first entry for class 1
GEW 98 Mauser, made in Danzig in 1917
as issued sights
1953 Yugo surplus ammo
no second strikes required
maybe the new extra power main spring helped?
only got 9 rounds on paper, and 8 inside rings
those barleycorn sights didn't help my eyes..... :(
score: 65 with 1 X

Argentine 1909 in excellent condition with excellent bright bore, so it it is a good example to judge accuracy. Those four shots toward the top, my last four after shooting 10 shots within around 7 to 10 minutes and since I never did a 10 shot volley in it before, I'm thinking once the barrel heated up impact went up, my guess anyway.

So my Swiss 1911 #1, I have two of them. Last time I shot it it was dead on, this time it was shooting way low , so two shots to raise the sights, maybe a different lot of ammo or someone monkeyed with the sight at the range, I don't know but after the third shot it was in the black so I was gonna do the 10 shot volley and imagine my frustration when I counted 11 holes duh! So this doesn't count, gonna take it back out AGAIN to do the entry but thought I'd show because it is accurate so far living up the legend of the Swiss rifles being accurate.

sadly, I have several rifles that walk the shots - unless I shoot extremely slow and allow cooling time.
usually I just shoot quickly and live with it, as I want to know what would happen on the battle field.

I will be bringing out the Swedish mauser and Finnish Mosin and maybe some others, will see what happens but the Swiss, the shots never seem to string or walk even when it gets warm. I did notice that 1911 does better with FMJ rather than soft points though.

Lots of people think that mosins are inaccurate, especially the M44. I am not one of those people.

This rifle made me laugh out loud the first few shots with massive amount of leaves kicked up by the muzzle blast. I am actually surprised they didn't catch fire!

Bolt action challenge:
Smith Corona 1903-A3 Greek return
IMR4895 48.5g
Hornady 150g BTFMJ
HXP 72 brass
Rem 9 1/2 primer

The target on the left is off bags; the high 9 and 8 are the 1st two shots from a clean bore
(I should have shot the offhand before the bags)
. The target on the right is offhand so I guess they're both Class 1 for this challenge. I score the left target a 97-3x and the one on the right as a 91-2x

I'm gonna just inject some thoughts and pics into this away from posting a actual entry for now. I have a Mosin carbine 91/59 that at least so far with 5 or 6 shot group tests produced this see photos. A ten shot group of MFS ammo was way wider but I attribute that to the ammo it has not been the most accurate ammo in any of my Mosin.

So yes a Russian Mosin or Mosin carbine can be pretty accurate the thing is though with all them having been used in service heavily, and refurbished for sale, some can be and some might not be. But the Finnish Mosin, is almost always accurate , same with the Swiss or Swedish Mauser, it is almost a given that before trying it is already known it will shoot good but most of those were put into the surplus market in 718 (3888 x 2592).jpg 100_2377.JPG 100_2201.JPG excellent condition.

Tag. I've not done one of these in a while; might be fun.

EDIT: Are handloads allowed? I'm not sure I even have any surplus left.

Regards,
Josh

greetings,

my last class 1 iron sights entry
only managed 7 of 10 on paper - eyes just went off the cliff, so I'll save my ammo for later

Jap type 38, 6.5 x 50mm
PCI 156 gr SPRN ammo
never used it before, so don't know how good it is

she's a long, tall old lady - so I took several pics to show it all.
also she suffered some battle damage - if the former owner was holding it in firing position he lost his right hand, plus the fingers of his left hand.
you can still see slivers of metal embedded in the stock.
still has the mum, so it was captured rather than surrendered.
