I don't even know how to react to some events in new America ...if you do, let's have it.

I live in Arizona, foothills of the valley. Yesterday morning I was helping a buddy with a Pontiac he had shipped from the east, an old family car with a 389 and twitchy three deuce setup. The car had been sitting so we did the usual over a week, then finally went to start -- BANG BANG BOOM! Friggin hilarious, and it didn't help we had removed the exhausts. Twenty minutes later, a cop car blocks the drive and two officers approach. "Sorry to bother you, anyone been shooting here?" That was so unexpected we drew a blank, didn't connect backfire with "SHOTS FIRED."

That was morning. The two ended their shift before sunset and returned for a beer as invited, the older officer had served with the corps for six years and had spotted a Marine Division Banner on the wall of the garage, hence we got the full story. Hearing several backfires, a neighbor had called 911, and as part of a routine call, they had to speak to this clown. Did she see a gun? No, but she certainly knew what one sounded like. Keep in mind this is Arizona. The neighbor is a new arrival from California. It ended well because we made some new friends who love what's left of real America, but like the younger patrolman said, wonder why they come here?

I didn't react in terms of a response, would anyone?

That's funny. Guessing the neighbors probably aren't shooters, hunters etc. I can see how one might make the mistake. The car sounds cool, Bonneville, Catalina?

I've had cops come to my garage when I am running open headers on the Duster. My neighbors are great, calls come from the next block over. LOL

Now that you mention it I haven't heard a car backfire in years..... Has electronic fuel injection eliminated that sort of thing ? Lots of folks these days would probably interpret that noise as gunfire because they have never heard backfires. I've heard a lot of it back in the day. Some of it from tri - power pontiacs, too. A 64 & 65 GTO to be precise. Buddy of mine was into them big time. What model Pontiac was this ?

This is a greenish/blue/silver GTO, I think he said "Teal" but I might have that wrong, 65 convertible that belonged to an uncle. He also left him firearms from 60 to 70 production. The backfires were loud as any big bore I've heard ...so along with open headers that was too much fun. The idea of calling police over something like this never would have happened only a few years ago, this is an open carry state and shooting is allowed just down the hill from this location. My buddy was hopping mad, I told him to relax, nothing to be gained with a challenge or confrontation. His response is I've gotten too mellow. My argument, don't overreact. Like that.

Always loved the Duster, a buddy had one and it would scoot.

That's so funny.

So many move to AZ, ID etc because CA is going so very bankrupt, too expensive, plus or minus planned massive electrical blackouts and wildfires.

Gunshots can sound like lots of things and vice-versa. I don't see anything wrong with a concerned neighbor that truly believed she heard gunshots. As has been said, gunfire in town nowadays is much more prominent than a backfiring car. I see the cops responding in a way that didn't impose any problems, while finding the actual cause of the sound.

Maybe she came there because she feels safer there than she did in California. Maybe gunshots were common in her previous neighborhood. Hard to judge folks when you haven't walked in their shoes. Had it been crime involving a real shooting, would you have preferred she close the curtains and turn up the T.V.? IMHO, part of being a responsible neighbor is looking out for your neighbors, being capable of observing and noticing/reporting anything suspicious and out of the ordinary. That's what I would call gunshots or a car back-firing several times that sounds like gunfire, in a generally quiet neighborhood.

Back in ‘69 I raced my 68 SS Camero against a 67 GTO with 3 deuces on a 389. I raced every night, so I don’t remember who won. But I do remember getting chased by the cops afterwords. I got away by parking in someone’s driveway and shutting off the lights.

ha! Been there done that before! Problem is you have to have an inconspicuous car! First time I got away with it, years later I did the same thing with something much more exotic and um well I got caught that time lol. It’s hard to hide from the radio when you have a super unique car.

And people wonder why there are signs back home that say "come visit! but no forget to go home"
Dosent matter where they go, or why, but a lot of people try rebuild exactly what they left.....no matter how much they didn't like it.

AARGH!! You're so right about this. I wish I could click "like" twice.

I have a few buddies who have moved from UK. At first they've been ecstatic that you can actually own firearms and have pretty much anything licensed. I've even introduced a couple of them to hunting, after they've had enough of blasting away magazine after magazine of ammo on full auto and wanted something more meaningful to exercise their newfound right (permanent resident / dual citizenship) for.

If you hear gunfire within 15 miles of downtown Helsinki, there's a 99.9% chance it's just someone hunting. Farther than 15 miles, it's 99.999%. Heck, even my primary deer plot is 11 miles from downtown business district.

After a few years, what do they do? VOTE PROGRESSIVE/GREEN/LEFT. "Because of social injustice, things have to change and we have to be compassionate!". Yeah, right. How did that work for your gun rights and civil liberties in the UK? Including having dinner knives and forks in locked display cabinets in stores, to comply with the law? Highest density of government-operated surveillance cameras per capita in the world? Freedom of speech, or what's left of it?

People never learn. Really. As a clinical hypnotherapist I know intimately how easy it is to manipulate people with propaganda, and history seems to repeat itself once in every two or three generations. Not that I've given up on people, but the first and foremost lesson I've taught my kids is when (not if; when) the world goes crazy next time by a majority vote, weather the storm, prepare for anything and be prepared to rebuild once it's over.

Oh well. Off the soapbox for now.

I heard a backfire as some kids drove an older POS up my road. Before I heard the vehicle I just heard the bang down the road.

I remember saying out loud “Huh. Guess someone shot something.”

Not unheard of and it is illegal within city limits. But there’s animals everywhere here so it’s not exactly out of the ordinary. You hear shots all hunting season.

No cops.

Back in the day l owned a 74 goat and a 67 Barracuda that had dual quads. Used to feed them 100 octane aviation gas. The local PD was well acquainted with me.:p These days I need to get more than 10 MPG.:D So a small 6 cyl Jeep it is. Unfortunately things are lots different today. I could sling my 30-30 over my shoulder, take it to school and leave it in the office so I could go hunting after school. That was 1975 in Bangor ME. No more though. No loaded fitearms--no CCW within 1000 ft of the school now. They can't even take a folding knife or ammo of any kind to the parking lot on school property in a personal vehicle anymore. It's kind of sad now if you ask me

That's another thing that has amused me a bit. Back in the 80's I used to keep my IPSC rig (comped .45 Gold Cup, belt, hoster, mag pouches, half a dozen mags, some 300-500 rounds of handloaded major-class ammo etc.) in my high school locker and no-one thought much of it. Shooting range was half a mile from the school and it was much more convenient than going back home to get the gear and return for practise sessions.

Nowadays, bringing a gun anywhere near a school will cause a panic. Back then even my yearbook motto - and they actually printed it, of course - was "No problem, I've got a Ruger and ammo for two weeks"... :)

I live in California and you can bet in about 3 1/2 years I will be leaving here and moving elsewhere. Perhaps AZ, NM, TX...who knows?
I have lived in and left California 4 different times. Every time I move I get painted with the same broad brush by people assuming that I am a leftist looney from La-La-Land.

Here’s the kicker. If your area is tilting left more than likely it’s because people pay more attention to sports and other inane things rather than watch what kids are being taught in school or what their own government is doing and that includes city and county governments. It’s probably not because one family from California moved there.

The majority of people I know in California aren’t unAmerican lunatics hell bent on destroying this country or your neighborhoods.

A backfire, hmm? I seem to recall, I'll say a friend to protect the guilty, used to occasionally turn the ignition off and back on while driving, especially through an underpass or tunnel. This sometimes resulted in, yes, a loud backfire.

One time too many in a car I, I mean my friend, was driving for work when he was eighteen resulted in a blown out muffler.

These things were done far from home, so no irate neighbors.

To the OP: You should invite your neighbor to go shooting so she knows what the real deal sounds like.
