2BE42EF4-2491-4F5A-A7BA-009495233FE0.jpeg Seems people do these. I’m curious.

I’m all about accuracy. Speed is fine, accuracy is final and all that.

I’ll do some (for me) speed shooting at plates. (Not very fast but, I rarely miss).

But then I start shooting at distance. 25-50-100 yards. I figure if I can hit at 100, 50’s easy. 25 is a cake walk.

Your favorite handgun. Standing. Unsupported 2 hands, on an IDPA (IPSC) target. 100 yards. Iron sights.

This is my target. 14 hits out of 15.

Thank you.

More credit to good gun and great trigger than anything.

The front sight is actually bigger than the target at 100.

Federal 230 gr ball.

Other than a mortar like trajectory, the .45 has always served me well. And, ball seems to work fine.

I remember in the good old days, it was the Hensley and Gibbs #68. That was a pretty good shooting bullet too. Loaded that by the Thousands in a Star reloader.

An old shooter (well, he was old then...now, I’m the old shooter) told me to get hits on an IPSC target at 100, just pretend the guys holding his fist on top of his head and aim there.

Is this a official challenge? If so I'm in. Never have tried handgun at 100 yards would be interesting to see. Now is it just a post your target, or is there a actual scoring? Can someone give me the measurements of what the target should be?, I'll get a cardboard box at work and cut out targets or does it have to be a official target?. And what is the expected round use 15 shots ?

Go to page 18 of this link. It’s the IDPA rulebook. That page gives target dimensions.

10 rounds hit. The hole on the very top was there. 115 gr fiocchi 9mm. Walther pps m2 le.

Thats pretty darned good with a short barreled gun!!

I’m not sure how “official” this challenge is. I was just curious what people can do with a carry handgun at 100. Scoring rings are there. But, I figure any hits in the torso and head qualify for “minute of felon” accuracy.

Just cut out a cardboard silhouette of your favorite jacket and see what happens! Or, the jacket if it’s no longer your favorite.

I ponder shots like this. Upstairs in the food court at the mall. Some guy shows up yelling Aloha Snackbar and starts shooting people on the main floor. Can I get him? Can I keep him busy so he’s not killing people until the cavalry arrives?

Or, do I need to close the distance before I shoot.

I love accuracy. I see the younguns with their high capacity wonder guns hosing rounds at 7 yards.

Then, have them try and hit a steel plate at 25. 50 yards. And, many don’t have the skill.

I think it’s all necessary. Speed, movement etc. But, it’s a real confidence builder for them when they see (with a little training),they can be accurate too.

Mine was 15 rounds. Two 7 round mags and, one in the chamber. That’s why it was 15 :).

If you engage at that distance here in Okieland, the Oklahoma Self Defense Act notwithstanding, you will very likely go to prison.

You have no right thinking you should try to shoot a bad guy @100 yards. You are responsible for every round that leaves your barrel. As for closing the distance, you are not Law Enforcement and should not be acting like you are. People who think like you do scare me. Your should be escaping ASAP not playing LEO.

It's possible you should not be carrying a gun if you are serious about shooting 100 yards of more in a crowded mall. How can you know who is in the line of fire inside a store behind the bad guy? Know your target AND what's behind it which can't be done in your scenario.

I'm first and foremost a hunter, so my shooting is pretty much limited to 75 yds., and fired from a sitting, back rested position. But, I do a fair amount of offhand shooting at 50 yds. Here is one of my better targets-

Another I'm pretty darned proud of, though it wasn't offhand-

You've gotta be kidding me. You'd stand by and watch a bad guy mow people down because you're afraid of hitting someone? Or even worse you'd run away?? What's the point of carrying a firearm for the protection of one's self AND others, if you're afraid to use it?

Wow. There's much to unpack here.

I would not "stand by and watch" a BG "mow people down", but I'm also not going to prison to protect you or anyone else (with the exception of my wife).

If someone is shooting at a crowd 100 yds away from me, you better believe I'm leaving the area. When I worked for our crazy Uncle, I was expected to go towards the sound of gunfire, and I had training and equipment that was designed for just that. I don't carry that in a mall. If those folks expect protection, they need to carry a gun themselves.

I'm not carrying an offensive weapon. I am carrying a last-ditch, close quarters weapon. I am not "afraid" to use my SELF DEFENSE weapon for just that: self defense. I don't remember signing on to protect you. What am I, a super hero ? Neither am I an LEO. I took no oath to protect and serve. I am interested in defending me and mine.

The thought of shooting from another floor in a mall, or from 100 yds away, does not fit the self-defense profile in any State of which I'm aware. You shoot from that distance, you will likely go to prison.

@35 Whelen
It has nothing to do with fear Sir, it has to do with common sense and the law. It is completely irresponsible to shoot in a crowded mall @100 yards plus having no way to know who is behind the shooter and it will probably put you in jail.

I will protect myself and the ones I love from immediate danger. I'm not going to play super hero movie cop and end up killing a bystander. Everyone has a responsibility to protect themselves and their loved ones.

Except, I am law enforcement. 35 years. There are hallways in buildings and schools that I worked that were approaching 100 yards. If it’s a clean shot, to stop a murderer, why wouldn’t I take it? If it’s not, perhaps I need to close the distance. And, I know the difference.

People claim cops can’t shoot. I can. Quite well. And, I’m confident in my abilities and tactics.

There are times when innocent people are being killed. I’m not planning an escape. I’m going to stop him.

I don’t begrudge anyone for getting out of there.

Long shots are a possibility.

Just a suggestion, keep the thread "on target" toward long distance handgun target shooting and open a separate thread discussing the legalities and real life implications of firing at a bad guy at 50 or 100 yards.

I'm with you @sgt127, accuracy is interesting and fun.

Last week I bought a S&W 10-7 from Classic. Its deer season so my shooting opportunities are short. This morning I grabbed the revolver and a box of handloads and proceeded to whack my 25 yd. steel silhouette. This little revolver is proving to be extremely accurate, so I flung a couple at a 14" steel gong that hangs from my 100 yd. target stand, and hit it! So I loaded 5 more and was able to hit it 4 out of 5 times. What a huge confidence builder. I would've snapped a picture but the gong was already pretty dinged up with lead smears. I painted it and will try again over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Not enough pics here of people shooting at long distance! Needs more pics, less yap!

288 gr. 45 Colt at over 900 fps! Good load for near anything. Good shooting too. Glad to see the 32-20 as well.
