I did a little horse trading this weekend and ended up with two Spanish Civil War Mosins, a M91 and a M91 Dragoon.
This is the M91 Dragoon. It’s a 1925 Izhevsk. It has first series solid barrel bands and in a walnut stock.

Here you can see the Spanish MP8 Flaming Bomb cartouche.
Here’s a little info on the cartouche.

This makes the third M91 Dragoon in my collection.

Very nice. Before the days of smart phones I passed on a SCW M91/30, not sure if it was worth the slight premium. After I got on a real computer it was gone. Nice Rifle!

The dragoon is a little shorter( I think a couple of inches) than the m91.
Nice find gunny and with a US walnut stock to boot.
I used to enjoy collecting mosins.

What makes it a Dragoon, I thought those would be shorter, like a carbine?

In any case, remarkable condition, very cool Gunny!
Take a look at the rear sight. It’s the older saw tooth style. The barrel is the same length as a 91/30 but has a slightly thinner profile.
The Dragoon is approximately 4” shorter then the M91, if I remember right.

Its not a US stock. Remington and Westinghouse both used Walnut on the M91, but never made stocks for Dragoons. Spain made replacement stocks in walnut . I have a SCW M91 that I picked up a few years ago that has a nice walnut stock. You can still see the tool markings inside the stock from when it was hand carved.

More history please. The rifle seems to long to me. Did the Spaniards fight dismounted?

Very cool gun indeed.
Dragoons were used by mounted infantry. They would ride their horses and then dismount and fight.
Russia supplied the commies in Spain with M91s and M91 Dragoons. As far as I know, the Spanish didn’t have Dragoon units and just used the Dragoons to regular troops.

GunnyUSMC, I just want to say.... I really enjoy your posts with all these Classic rifles.

Thank you for taking your time to post all the info and photos.

Awesome Dragoon. Is The bore as clean as the rest of the rifle ?

The Konovalov sight. My favorite sight of all the Mosin sights. The Dragoon was a precursor to the M91/30, whether intentional or not. Some of the late Dragoons are almost the same as the first 91/30's.

The Russian handguard looks almost near matching to the stock.
Its hard to see the details on this phone I see the stamp now.
Forgot Chatellerault walnut as well anyway nice find.

The bore is very nice. There's a little bit of a shadow in the groves, but it has strong lands.
Your welcome. If there are other parts of the rifle that you would like to see pics of, just let me know and I'll try to take them.
I may get all three of my Dragoons out for a group photo.

Russia had three Mosin. The 1910 Carbine, The M91 and the M91 Dragoon. In the late 20's the Russians decided that they needed a standard rifle. They decided on a rifle the length of the Dragoon, but with a slightly heaver barrel. They up graded the sights to a sturdier ladder type rear and a globe front. The new rifle was adopted in 1930. Dragoons were upgraded if they were in good condition or rebuilt. M91 actions were used to build 91/30s.
Most M91 and Dragoons that survived came from weapons that were captured by Finland, or given to Spain are the Balkans.
I enjoy collecting these old rifles, but one day I will have to find them a new home.
I'll try to do a post tonight on the M91.

Had you been on the hunt for a spanish civil war rifle?

Still to this day so many thing a mosin is a mosin is a mosin.....nope nope nope, so many interesting roads to go down with this thing...it has been about everywhere.

It took me about 5 years to finally find the Remington with the markings I had been hunting......the search is part of the fun.

And with a very nice bore and an exterior that looks so nice it looks like you got a winner..... Thanks for the pix and the historical outline. Those things can be fascinating once you get into them.

I'm always on the look out for something outside the norm. I already have a few SCW rifles. I got this one from a friend. We have both been collecting for some time, but he is cutting back on his surplus rifles and knew that I would be interested.
We did some horse treading and I'm building him a target AR with a Wilson 20" heavy fluted barrel.

I do not know if I like that cartouche better or the receiver crest stamps.. That is a wonderful rifle.. Real clean.. Oh yeah like that was not enough lest not forget the Izhevsk Bow and Arrow...

Many thanks for the photos, I think many of us mere mortals out were not worthy to see such a nice rifle..

Problem with markings on the wood is they are just so easy to have them go away.

I love seeing nice crisp markings on the wood.....it is just something you dont see every day.....not going to hijack his thread with my latest two.
