You can do the math, but Model 43 shipping is listed as M60001-M99999 were shipped from 1973-1977. Based on that your gun was probably shipped in 1974

This going to be a thread for those who are looking for a date of manufacture for their S&W revolvers.

We'd need to know :

a) caliber
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle)
c) grips shape (round or square)
d) number of shots/cylinder bores
e) type of sights.
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip
g) Model number if it is under the crane.
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

A picture or two is worth A LOT of words in this case...

Hi All and thanks in advance for help identifying this 32 long S&W, and maybe price range. The pics should show everything, but:
32 LONG CTG stamped on barrel
4" barrel
6 shot, extractor has guide pins
SN is 294118 on butt, 294119 on cylinder, B 294118 under barrel
Pat. dates end in Sept 14 08, Dec. 29 14
I don't see a logo anywhere, just Smith & Wesson on the left side of the barrel.
I'm guessing 32 HAND EJECTOR THIRD MODEL but that is a very uninformed guess. Barrel is quite cruddy so will be some cleaning before I even think of firing it, rest of the pistol seems to be in great shape.
Appreciate any help.

I believe you are dead on the money from your description. According to the Standard Catalog 4th edition. These were produced starting in 1919-1942 with the serial number range from 263001-536684. Looks pretty darn nice to be close to 100 years old.

A) 38 spl
B) 4"
C) round
D) 6
E) fixed
F) 170715 no letters anywhere
G) I cannot find anything some pitting in that area

same serial number on the bottom of the barrel hard to get a good pic of that area.

I think what you have is a .38 Military and Police Model of 1902 3rd Change. Serial Number Range from 146900-241703 made 1909-1915. Obviously the hammer is broken. In the pictures the finish looks terrible but could be the pictures. My guess is the grips are worth more than the gun but I could be wrong. I do know if you decide to remove the grips, be extremely careful. They are hard rubber and 100 years old. Very Brittle. I've never removed a set that old but I understand they will crack very easily.

What you have is a S&W Hand Ejector Model of 1905. The serial number is not clear enough in pictures to narrow it down to which change.
Here are the date breakouts
1st change 22427-33500 1906-1909
2nd change 33501-45200 1906-1909 Yes there is date overlap according to the book
3rd change 45201-65700 1909-1915
4th change 65701-144684 1915-1940

Also check barrel length from tip of barrel to cylinder face. No mention in the book of a 3.75" Barrel. Only 4,5,6 and 6.5" were produced according to the records but custom lengths may have been produced.

Barrel length is definitely 3.75". 36520 is sn on butt.

That puts it as a 2nd change and I would guess around 1907. The barrel length is a little odd but I would think it would be considered a 4". That's just a guess based on no one would order a special gun only 1/4" shorter and if it had been chopped, certainly it would have been chopped more. You could get a letter for $100 and it would tell you everything as far as when it was shipped, barrel length, grips and where it was shipped to. Personally, I'd have it checked out and load up some light .32 rounds and shoot the crap out of it. Bet it would be a hoot to take to the range. How often do you get to shoot a 110 year old gun? I'm betting it shoots great unless the barrel is shot out or pitted and from the condition shown in the pictures, it looks to me like someone took pretty good care of it. I would just caution you with the grips. If you remove them, be super careful. Those old grips will crack easily.

Prior to 1958, your Model 27 was known as the "Registered Magnum". If you post the Serial Number, found on the butt, it can be dated more closely.

Thank you so much for the quick response sistema...I'll have to wait till I get home from work to check the butt...I took a pic of the numbers that are on the inside of the barrel arm and it's an N941xxx number...is that what your looking and asking for?

I almost forgot...I was told that the gun is older an is an unregistered ,since at the time of the original purchase , there was no weapon registration required? Does that sound about rite?

The "Registered Magnum" was made only 1935-1939. Registration was with the company, not the government.

Your Model 27-2 was made sometime 1961-1982.
The actual serial number on the butt can indicate the year.
