Albino squirrels?

Since Albinism is caused by a recessive gene, it must be a gene brought into the birth from both parents. In Mammals it occurs about once every 10,000 births. Inbreeding will increase frequency, and is why populations living together in small areas tend to have more. Here in Wisconsin we have a whole herd of Albino deer in a area north of me, while in the rest of the state, they are very infrequent. The exception is on the local Military base, where the deer have become so accustomed to humans they live around the buildings. These animals, because they have lived there from birth inbreed and produce many true albinos along with many Pie-bald deer. I have seen only one white squirrel in my life in the wild. Domestic New Zealand rabbits are albinos due to restrictive breeding as are white laboratory mice. In birds, reptiles and amphibians, the rate of albinism is about 5-6 times higher that with mammals.

That said, my back yard is filled with Black Squirrels, along with other dark brown to rusty cocoa colors. This too is a recessive genetic trait, often caused by inbreeding but occurs much more than albinism. Thing is, all the squirrels in my back yard are Greys and the gene that causes them to turn black is now known to have originated in Fox Squirrels. So it's not just inbreeding, it's also caused from the interbreeding of two species.

Brevard NC is known for their white squirrels, not albino though. It's even a squirrel sanctuary city, and holds an annual white squirrel festival. When vacationing there a few years ago, everyone in my family but me saw one, so I'm still not convinced they're there. lol

I first saw black squirrels roaming around at the Bronx Zoo many decades ago.

I have some Indian blood so if I had the chance I don't think I would shoot one.

Good. Me, too. I've read that sighting the albino squirrel brings you good luck that day. White squirrels have normal black eyes, hence; normal vision and see well at night. Albinos have the classic pink eye (from blood vessels) and like all albinoids; inherent eye problems.

I saw my first one in December 2018, after an unsuccessful deer season, I waited him out on Jan 01, 2019. He is at the taxidermist now.
Pure albino, pink eyes pink pigmented skin. I had NO Idea that he was a 1-10,000 mentioned above.

I’m hunting a spot this year that is known amongst a few of us to have albino squirrels. It is a small island on a local lake and the population must be pretty well isolated, but of the 4 people I know of who are aware of this island, there are 3 albino squirrels stuffed. I hope to get mine this year.

We found the spot bass fishing. There’s a really hot spot where there’s a drop off that holds fish. One was running around on a limb hanging out over the water.

I remember signs for a white squirrel festival somewhere but cannot remember where. I don't hunt but I think I remember people eating squirrel when I was very small. Not sure why or how. Stew, maybe? I suppose they liked it since they ate it. I couldn't shoot a white squirrel. I just couldn't. I would imagine that they are beautiful in their prime and I would love to see one. That is a beautiful photo, LNF150. Thank you.

Nice photos. It was Brevard where I saw the signs for the white squirrel festival. I didn't see one, either.
