So, Ive decided to go with the poll winner from the last thread I had up, and do the .30-06AI.

The genesis for this build was pretty much the same for most of my random ideas.
I bought some cheap part I had no real need for, this time it was an old Shilen/Brownells .308 barrel off ebay.
...heh least this one was way cheaper in the long run than that .280AI die set I got for 12 bucks or something......

I then mentioned that I had it to my FFL buddy who decided he wanted to learn to do a barrel swap, and ream in a short chamber (very short as it were). So I bought a old savage 110 off Gunbroker.
After waffling on chamberings (and shooting up all the surplus ammo he had in the factory 06 barrel) He signed the gun over to me, and I just need to register it before yanking the barrel off and getting started. Which I should have time to do Friday on my day off.

Gonna get started this weekend, on the basic fitting, and ordering reamers, gauges, and a crowning tool.

here are the parts that Ive currently got on hand.

Savage 110 from the early 90s i think.
Guns in ok shape for a working rifle.
The barrels got sort of a weird taper to the very front, which makes me wonder if it wasnt carried around in a scabbard or something like that. Actions unusually smooth for a savage.
The triggers been messed with. It was sticky when we got it in, and would let the firing pin drop as the bolt handle closed. Hold the trigger forward and let the bolt down and it was fine...just.....interesting. took it apart today, and found the spring tension adjusted to nothing.
Came in a ramline stock which im not a fan of in the slightest.
sellers picture.

Barrel is 26" carbon, little rusty on the out side, but pristine on the inside. Chamber is .308 and twist is 1-10.

The gun also came with a Weaver Kaspa 3-9x40, which is amusingly a step up from the scope the gun was listed with, an old simmons 8 point, so im not sure what happened there. Im going to put my Athlon Midas btr on, since my buddy kapu'd my Burris ffE1 4.5-14x42.

Should be done by next weekend, or there 'bouts. If my buddy can come over to do the barrel work.
Ill order dies and brass, as well as some new projectiles (and looks like I just won an old choate sporter stock on ebay) to go with the 165 hornadys I have on hand. Not sure what yet, maybe try the 178eldxs again, they did well in my Bergara. Ill also figure out what size recoil lug I need and order that soon as I can pull the barrel on the gun.
So this should all be done fairly quickly.

Thanks guys, Im looking forward to this one too...
Ive always wanted a .30-06AI, and a shoulder barreled savage is just weird enough to amuse me in and of its self.

A note on these old brownells barrels, as that what ive USUALLY seen them listed as on ebay. They are usually cheap, and the only real way to know if its a savage or remington unless listed will be the bolt head cut, as the threading looks exactly the same in pictures.
They are also spec'd for an over size recoil lug (which i didnt explain earlier) and the original "kit" came with it. I asked Shilen about it last week and didnt get a real helpful answer, which is why im going to have to install and measure.

lol, yeah while they may not be the worst stocks in existence.....I dont know any worse, in any department.
Those are the better bolt knobs, longer larger, looks less cheap....gonna swap out that rear bolt for a hex key one tho, dont like that flat head slot....dont like the flat head screws on the bottom either.

Gonna have to work out a color scheme for this one also. I want the metal duracoated, and the only colors i have are FDE and black....so maybe desert camo (primary coat/color being fde dura) or something similar.....or black....we all like black yeah?

Camo would be cool. Maybe do the hole thing in fde then sponge some black on.

I have a old savage 257ai I am going to pull the shouldered barrel and replace it with a threaded 308 barrel. If I can get the bolt situation worked out. Looking forward to the project. I like the savages.
whats the "bolt situation" I have a couple bolt heads, and I THINK a bolt body laying around somewhere.

You could try fish netting it too.
Thats another good idea!

Loonwulf,Those old 3 screw triggers can be tuned very nicely and still be very safe. I have a couple that break at 2.5 - 3.0 lbs.
Yeah, i just put a couple clicks of tension into the trigger and reduced the engagement slightly. Its breaking right at 3lbs now. I may go to a smaller dia wire to give me a little more range of adjustment.

I have a left hand long action pre-66 Savage. The bolt head has a nose on it like a remington 700 that makes it incompatible with modern Savage barrels. From what I can gather, I need a new bolt head, bolt body, firing pin, and possibly every other part in the bolt except the handle. Basically, I need a whole new bolt. And can you buy a new long action left hand bolt? No. Short action and right hannded? Yes. Savage would t sell on to me or a gunsmithing. They say you have to send them the gun to get a new bolt installed, BUT, they won't touch anything made before like 1994. So I'm left with trying to piece something together from various sources, but since I dont know exactly what I need, that's problematic.[/QUOTE]

If your willing to go to a magnum bolt face there is one on ebay right now.

Ill keep an eye out for the rest of the parts as well.

The bolt heads are all over. And I can easily gather the small parts for the head. It's the rest that gets trickier. There are a lot of small parts in a bolt. And I know that part 25, the big nut on the back, has a new version and an old. Who knows how many of those other dinky parts are different. And small parts $$ add up fast.

Well the savage ive got has the "old" style, and im planing on swaping to the newer one so well find that out LOL. Everything else LOOKS the same as the other savages ive had...least according to the diagram.

I've got a super old one with the ejector in the mag well and the extractor is different too.

besides the long bolt nose it looks the same as the bolt ive got.
well that and the extractor/ejector mech.
