Walmart is lowering prices on the ammo they are discontinuing, at least at our local store.

Winchester .223 200rd. loose boxes for $47, and it looked like many of the handgun calibers were reduced as well.

Bully for them.

I used to go to WM about once a week to buy ammo or at least see what they had on the shelf at a good price. Then I'd stroll through the other departments to see if I needed anything else: clothing, tools, auto parts, household, gardening, food, etc. Most of the time they didn't have any ammunition I needed, but I'd never leave without buying something.

If they no longer sell ammunition then I no longer have reason to step foot in the store at all. All the other categories are available elsewhere at comparable or better prices.

As far as this shopper is concerned I don't know what their business model is.

Personally I am not adverse to walking out of Walmart with a score on discounted ammunition - and nothing else.
If WM wants to dump their remaining ammo inventory at great prices- in which case they are enabling me to increase my range time ...if they are willing to help me shoot my guns -
who am I to argue?

Right there with you brother, and I make no apologies for it. Someone will buy and shoot it, and I rather it be me.

I’m all for not supporting a business I disagree with. And being a handloader, I have no need for store bought ammo. But if the prices are so so low I can justify the deal, I’m buying it and it can set on my shelf for the next 10 years. Their loss is my gain. They will lose out in the long run anyways. Because this won’t end with ammo.

I was at one of my local Walmart stores yesterday..they had done a new reset of the ammo shelves to reflect the recent changes. Oddly, Remington .38 Special+P 125 grain SJHP were gone from the mix but Winchester 130 grain FMJ remained. ..Still trying to figure out their thought process on what gets eliminated and what doesn't. Maybe it was all a smokescreen to get the antis off their back.

I just picked up Win 55 gr fmj 5.56 200ct for $50, and Fed 115 gr 9x19 brass fmj 100ct @ $15. Not fabulous, but lots of empty space on the shelves. If they want to sell me US made ammunition cheap, I don't need to agree with their latest PR efforts. The winds of public opinion blow both ways.

The WM local to me has about the same stock as always. The stuff it seems they are getting rid of MIGHT be priced a dollar or so less but nothing to race there for IMHO. I left with a bulk pack of WIN. 22 and nothing else. Whatevero_O

I was at Walmart about a week ago. They still had .223, 5.56, and 9mm on the shelf. They probably have more on the shelf since they stopped selling it than they did 5 years ago. When they announced they were going to stop selling it, I predicted it would still be on the shelf for sale on Black Friday.

I don't usually buy steel , but at $7 per box I could not pass.

funny, I just had a conversation yesterday with the sporting goods gal at the prescott, arizona walmart. she said that walmart stopped selling all centerfire handgun ammo and all .556 nato/223 rem. ammo. they still sell all other centerfire rifle and all 22 rimfire ammo.

so, I guess, walmart will let you hunt and plink. this pc (politically correct) move is going to cost them in the long run, imo.

My theory is that these are low margin products that have been stocked to get folks in the door. Playing to the sentiment of the moment gets them out of the less profitable stuff "for all the right reasons". They had probably lost much of this market to online sales anyway. They know what they are doing.

Winchester 230gr jhp .45acp (white box) was down to $30/box of 50 ctgs at my local Wallys

I'm betting she's just repeating what a manager told her who is repeating what someone higher up told them.
They can go for years "selling off what's in their warehouses". Who knows how much is in them? They can even restock the warehouses with no one the wiser.

I remember when I lived in NJ and would venture into Manhattan there were stores with faded fly specked signs in the windows saying "Going out of business". They were they for years.

Quite variable from store to store. Last week in the western part of the state I checked a WM ; ammo was fully stocked and at standard prices. My local store has significant discounts and the case is emptying out. Clerk stated that there will be no restock - when the shelves are empty the ammo sales are finished. WWB 9mm 115 gr is $17 per 100 , btw. Not bad , got some yesterday.
Could be that there are still warehouse reserves , but the retail sales seem to have room for manager's discretion.

I don't know, but the ammo shelf is starting to look like what she said.
