Guys, I’ve got some muzzle brakes that desperately need cleaned. They are turning blue they have so much lead build up and stuff. What do you guys do to remove this on cerakoted brakes? I try and get in there and scrub as best I can but I can’t get to it all. I used to soak stuff in something mild like Hoppes, but I did that with a cerakoted AK brake once and it removed everything. I know cerakote is supposed to stand up to all chems but I don’t want to take the chance again. There has to be something. Sonic cleaner, if I had one but I don’t. Any ideas?

Sonic cleaner,

Would take it off, too. If Hoppes did, that is. Probably wasn't put on right, or so I hear.

Elbow grease?:)

I use a small flat screw driver and a brass hammer for my rimfire comp. It may be a bit harsh for paint. Or a bit redneck. But that's what I do. The comp is made of Aluminum and is not scratched yet. My neck is red, chiseling it out is faster, but because it is a rimfire pistol I am not so concerned with total cleanliness. I'll be doing it again in three minutes...

I would use a copper remover for barrels and be ginger about the painted parts.

What is this on? Do the baffles need to be that clean? I don't notice a build up on my ARs, but I scrub them like tires and hose them off.
Why is the bore vaporizing that much copper?
Does the Cerakote come off the barrel?

Hi. Thanks for the reply. The cerakote may not have been applied correcy on the AK. The brakes that I’m concerned with are on some very expensive precision bolt rifles ranging from .243-.338. They are all blue in the ports. The threads and everything else looks fine but the ports are certainly getting buildup. And no sir I’ve never had and cerakote come off any of my barrels but I don’t usually scrub the outside of my barrels or get anything on them. If I do clean the outside I just rub down with Rem Oil or Ballistol and wipe down with a silicone rag afterwards.

I wondered as much.
I would try to find a bore brush that fits the ports just right and scrub carefully.
If it can survive the blast and heat from the combustion, it ought to survive some bore scrubber. Just try not to let it drip, I guess.
It just shouldn't come off that easy.
