Congrats on a buck and a very nice rifle. I took my Ruger no. 3 in 30-40 out for elk with 175 grs Berger VLD at 2600 fps. One of my Krags did get a day on mulies with 210 grs Lyman 311284 at 1750, but, alas, no joy. With the Lyman 21 pattern sight on my Winchester 1895, I hope to get out with it next year and will be working off your 180/4350 load. Thank you.

The basic decision to use the 220 grain/4350 load was that approximately 40 grains of 4350 replicated the original military load that pushed a 220 Cupro Nickle bullet 2050 FPS from a 30" barrel according to internet lore. I had a buddy run the numbers through Quick Load. That differed a bit from the internet lore as QL indicated that 36 grains pushed it to 2050. QL indicated that the MV reduced to 1865 FPS using a 22"" barrel. I don't have a chronograph so I put together a trajectory chart for the anticipated speeds and then confirmed them at various ranges to confirm the trajectory no matter the distance or what speed it was going. I'd be interested in what the 4350 does with the 180 grain projectiles. I suspect we could get decent velocities with a 150 grain projectile but I didn't have time last year when I was developing this load. In the end, this is a short range carbine with a rainbow trajectory. As long as I can identify a landmark at 180 yards, that being the + or - 3" range with a 150 yard zero, I am in tune enough to make quick decisions for hold over/under within that range. Beyond that I need another rifle. Be careful developing a load for these rifles as they only have one locking lug and the 1898 model revision removed the bolt recess that could be relied on as a safety lug.

I read the NV guidlines on ethical hunting and found the law. Man that is worded such that it could be interpreted a lot of ways. I would read 'camp' in this context to mean camping. But I could see an officer reading the word camp in a more relaxed definition. As in "I'm going to leave my campsite and camp out by the water for today's hunt".

http://www.ndow.org/Hunt/Resources/Ethics/

"It is unlawful for any person to camp within 100 yards of a waterhole in such a manner that wildlife or domestic stock will be denied access to such a waterhole.”

I thought it was federal law that you couldn't camp, as in camping, within 1/4 mile of a water hole or stock tank.

When I lived in NV, if you camped out at a water source - pond, creek, seep or whatever, the game wardens were going to make your life hell.
