Are there any options to mount a light or laser on a S&W 659 built back in the 80's?. It has no rail for mounting. I was sure that back in the day, I saw such lights or lasers that would clamp onto the trigger guard. Yet I cannot find such an item at the major vendors. Perhaps they stopped making them. Any suggestions gratefully received.

So after additional research, I was unable to find any specific mounts for a S&W 659 and Crimson Trace no longer makes a lasergrip for the 659. I was discussing this with a colleague and he told me about a rail that he installed on the dustcover of a 1911. It was made by a company called RailTec, and it was a short length of rail attached via 3M tape. Unfortunately, the company is out of business, and I could not find any current inventory. I am pondering buying a short length of rail and seeing if I can attach it with 3M VHB tape. My friends and neighbors who work at Boeing and other aeronautical shops tell me that VHB is successfully used for permanent metal joining in some applications. If this does not work, I will have the frame drilled and tapped instead.

I'd just buy a gun with a rail.

I am pondering this, but I would like to leverage my current investment in the 659. I was looking at a M&P 2.0 the other day, and my preferred model would be over $ 500 out the door and none of my LGS have this model in stock, so it would be a special order. In Washington state now with the transfer fees and the state collecting 9.2% 'use tax' on out-of-state purchases, you really don't save much, if at all, ordering online and having it shipped to a FFL. The only time you can save money is a private transfer since no 'use tax' is collected on private transfers.

To me, since the 659 is long out of production, and while they are pretty good shooters, the value in a 659 is more as a collectable (or simply pride of ownership) than as a shooter. I'd really have to think twice (actually, a whole lot more times) before I started drilling on a gun that probably can't be replaced.

There are bunches of guns that shoot just as well as a 659 and already come with a rail that you wouldn't have to drill on. Heck, if you want to drill on a gun, an M&P would be a good one as they are still being made and can be found nearly everywhere.

... If this does not work, I will have the frame drilled and tapped instead.
:what::eek: <making sign of the cross to ward off E-vil> :)

If you cannot comfortably use your 659 without permanently modifying it to add lighting, rather than traveling the Bubba Path please seriously consider buying a pistol that is engineered to welcome such accessories.

I bought my 659 in the mid'80s. It is still my new-9x19-test-loads pistol of choice. It is accurate, and heavy(!) enough to be very stable, so long as you are strong enough to hold it at arm's length for any period of time. ;)

I just weighed my 659 and my Glock19-4 (each with a loaded OEM 15rd mag installed). The 659 weighs 50% more than the Glock (45.5oz vs 30oz).

The idea for a rail mounted with VHB tape was a bust. There is not sufficient flat surface on the frame in front of the trigger guard to mount a rail. So this would apply to having the frame drilled and tapped for a rail mount, as well.

I regret selling my 659. It was great for boating trips.

I still have a Devel converted model 59, a pile of mags, and a Keltec carbine that takes them.

There’s always J B Weld :D Seriously, this is a sign that you’re supposed to buy a new gun.

Have you searched eBay for a used set of laser grips?
