This morning, my son went out to the forest behind his house in Vassalboro, ME, and collected this nice 7-pointer with the first Rem 700 (30-06) I bought, back in 1975 or so, when I got my FFL. I used it for many years, then gave it to him.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Several years ago he was getting ready to go out hunting, but forgot something, so leaned the rifle against the counter. When he came back, the rifle was on the floor mat, but he didn't think about it and went hunting. He saw a nice buck on the woods road, about a hundred yards away and fired. He missed! He fired four more times and missed all of them!!! He reloaded as the deer came back out, headed the other way and fired again!

He looked at the rifle and the scope objective was bent down, almost to the barrel! A light went on in his head. Apparently, the dog had knocked the rifle down and it landed on the scope, on the rug. He brought the rifle to my house next door and we put a spare scope on it, which he still uses.

The rest of the story: Sometime later, I decided to try straightening the discarded scope, so placed it on my workbench on a thick cloth and whacked it with a rubber hammer and got it straightened out perfectly. I tried it on my CZ...got it sighted-in, and it works great!!!

Hope you enjoyed the story.

Nice to see older, passed down guns, still going out and getting the use they deserve. And still performing the job they were intended to. Congrats to your son on a fine animal.

The rifle got glass-bedded and free-floated and still shoots sub-MOA groups. It's probably seen over 1,000 rounds through it, which is quite a bit for a deer-hunting rifle.

I couldn't afford a BDL, but a '68 vintage ADL in 6mm Rem was my first deer rifle. $114 was what the sporting goods store where I worked charged. Good to see the classics still bring home the venison. And the falling rifle story is a good reminder to make sure they are still shooting to point of aim before heading out for game.

I gotta ask, what make of scope was that?
