I know coming here and asking "should I buy it" questions are only going to lead me in the direction I want to go anyway, but something a little off that....

There's a NIB blued Series 70 Gold Cup local to me at a reasonable price, I think. Plastic box, so I'd assume later production, I had one years ago in the cardboard/styrofoam that was used some when I bought it, and I shot it some more before I let it go in a moment of stupidity.

If I buy this one, since it's NIB, do I keep it that way, or shoot the thing? I have no idea, really, of the collector value, but it does seem like a bunch were made...

Mines 40+ years old never had a problem with it, can't say the same for the Kimbers I've bought.
Only problem with it is after all these years the trigger pull has worn to a scary 2lbs. or less.
Most accurate of my 6 1911's.

Colt Gold Cup Series 70, Original or Reproduction? In 45 acp or?

Serial numbers starting with 70N466XX range are accurate ones.

All shooters. Some are just more accurate then others.

I bought one and I'm going to try to wear it OUT!!! If I do .I'll get it rebuilt and start all over again!! LOL

Reasonably priced?

If you buy it, shoot it with care and care for the box & contents, a very large portion of the value will remain.

If you don't shoot it.... maybe you just haven't shot it yet. I have several NIB Colts I have not yet got around to shooting. Doesn't mean I will - doesn't mean I won't.

To paraphrase Lone Watie: "But it's not always for shooting'. Sometimes it's just for lookin' through."

I enjoy a great many unfireds by having them displayed close enough to man-handle from time to time.

The Gold Cup National Match pistols are still in the Colt catalog as well as a few other flavors that are called Gold Cups. See this page...

Since the one you are looking at is probably of recent manufacture, it is not "rare" enough to consider being collectable.

Mine is a couple years old and it shoots better than I can so I'm happy.

Good point, cfullgraf. My first one was the one hole trigger model, back in the early 80s, so I suspect that was probably the original, and the one I’m contemplating has a 3 hole trigger, so very likely a more recent production. His price is near MSRP, I suspect I could find a better price on line than his new/used.

Thanks, also, 243winxb, for the s/n range. That helps a lot.

Zero collectors value unless you want to leave it bone stock in shot for 50 years. If you want it buy it and shoot it.
