Which .45 ACP Revolver?

I carry a Ruger Vaquero in 45 Colt when in the woods. If I were to carry a 45 ACP it would be a S&W M625.

I'd like a 625 Mountain Gun in 45LC. I'd have the cylinder trimmed so I could run 45acp in moonclips. That'd be real slick I think.

Wouldn't mind one of the Redhawk convertibles either. I'd like a 5" one if I had my druthers.

No one informed my two Ruger Blackhawk convertibles that they don't shoot well with the ACP cartridges.

It seems in recent years at least manufacturers are using barrels of the same dimensions when models are offered in both calibers.

Mine shoots 45acp and 45 colt equally well (or poorly). Maybe I'm not a skilled enough marksman to be able to tell the difference.

Pro Tip: If you want to look like a better shooter than you really are at the range, a 7.5" barrel makes aiming MUCH easier. Also, a fatter caliber makes bigger holes that overlap. If I don't have any fliers, I can shoot the whole middle out of the target with a few cylinders of 44 or 45 and it looks impressive. With a 22lr and the same shot placement, there are a bunch of holes scattered in the middle and it looks kind of ho-hum.

I have a 2016 625 PC 4" and it's a very nice revolver for woods carry.

I also have a blackhawk convertible and mostly I shoot .45 acp in it. It is extremely accurate.

Depends what you want the blackhawk will let you load more powerful .45 colt rounds. The 625 is slick with moonclips.

I should have added the fact I don't do woods much anymore either. Time and age are catching up with me and while the mind is willing they body disagrees lol.

I also have a Ruger 45/45acp that’s my everyday carry gun very accurate with 45long hand loads or store bought,but moon clips and 45acp why bother it’s not as accurate as my Blackhawk convertible is with the acp cylinder and he did state weastern.

I sold my Ruger convertible and got some 625s after I saw Jerry fire 12 rounds in 2.99 seconds in one.

I have the Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt/.45 ACP. Since I hand load I prefer the .45 Colt but nice to know that the .45 ACP is there if needed!

S&W made a mountain gun in .45ACP a bunch of years ago.

The revolver that has been singing its siren song to me lately is the Ruger Redhawk .45 ACP/.45 Colt. So far I have avoided the lure, but somebody night need to tie me to the mast before I drop 10 Benjamins at the LGS.

Did someone say 45ACP in revolver, that's what woke me up so early LOL. The one thing I would say not to forget is that in a SA/DA revolver you will be able to fire 45 Autorim and not have to worry about moonclips. But as was stated I have moonclips that are 16 years old at this point still going strong.

Depends on ones use of the revolver.

When I acquired my first 1917, I giddily set about filling moon clips with ACP ammunition, all so I could walk a couple hundred feet to my range, shoot, then back to the shop to unload them. I finally realized that it takes far less time to drop individual ACP rounds into the cylinder, shoot them, either dump or pluck them out, repeat, than it does to piddle with loading/unloading moon clips. That said, I do keep moon clips loaded with SD ammunition for when I'm out and about...I just drop one or two spares in my pockets. And if I carry my 1917 to town, of course it's normally loaded with SD ammo.

As to the AR, this cartridge is much better than the ACP for loading heavy hunting bullets. My load for carrying around here is a 255 gr. cast SWC running over 900 fps. I would never trust this bullet/load to not slip a taper crimped ACP case. Plus loading in AR brass and using a roll crimp eliminates the step of taper crimping.

It is about preference some do not want to mess with the moonclips and difficulty of loading and unloading on the range. Sure moonclips are faster to reload with, but in a self defense situation if you are having to reload a revolver or even a pistol you are in a world of hurt. I do not call that self defense I call that WAR. Most that purchase the moonclips usually end up with with additional cost and toys like such to unload empties

You guys just need more moonclips. Load them at home in your leisure. Go to the range and shoot to your hearts content. Go home and unload/reload at your leisure.


And that is less than 1/3 for each gun.

Moonclips Rule.

That is a lot of moonclips, serious investment over time and I say with that many moonclips even unloading and loading at your leisure at home you will still end up with a bloody thumb with that many.

I can't talk because I mainly use moonclips on the range as well but do love Autorim so much easier.

Thats how I do it. Screw trying to do it at the range.

Do the same thing with my mags.

The moon clips really arent that bad if you buy them in bulk. Cheaper than mags with many things.

I had to try a number of makes before I found one that worked in my 625 (Revolver Shop). Luckily, those work in all the guns I have that take them. Not the case with the others.

They make a simple unloading tool that makes stripping the empties very simple. No more bleeding, for the most part.

Just a steel tube with a portion of the end milled off. They make a loading tool as well, but I actually find its easier to load 5 by hand, and set #6 with my Leatherman.

Hey, education is expensive! And you wouldnt learn any of this useful stuff in college, and they would still charge you for it.
