Savage axis in 308 vs Mossberg Patriot in 308

i bought two weatherby vanguard rifles(I think their better than any mentioned) at Walmart early this year on close out for 249.00+tax=264.00 OTR for Christmas gifts this year. Walmart has good prices several times a year, if your lucky enough get there when they put them on sale.

FWIW, I don't have any experience with the Ruger or Mossberg. I bought my Axis II XP w/accu triger , in 30-06 w/ Barska 3-9x40, a few years ago during a black Friday sale at Wal-Mart. Cost was $350 and I later got a $50 rebate. I wanted something that I could take out in all kinds of nasty weather and into Rocky forested areas without worrying about scratching or damaging it ( I can be rough on rifles).
It does have a cheap stock, plastic trigger guard and magazine. The ejection port is not for loading rounds unless you have the fingers of an elf. But it is what I wanted it to be. A cheap hunting rifle that shoots great. The trigger is equal to the Timneys and Boyds I have. I don't feel a need to have multiple magazines for a hunting rifle and this one works ( yes it is the cheapest mag i have On a rifle but it works). Maybe I could have picked up a nicer used rifle for the same money but I can not complain about this one.

I was and am a bit wary about small ejection ports, stiffer action or not, but I sprung for both a Compass and a Predator despite my nail biting, both of which have been trouble-free in optimal conditions.

Now that I’ve added an RDS to the Browning and Beretta the idea of picking up a MkIV Target/Laminate for under $400 has me tempted to take a third look at the Patriot. Darn Mossbergs are costing me a small fortune!

Even though the Vanguard is Weatherby’s economy rifle I do not think of them in those terms. To me they are more like a Remington 700 or Ruger M77 than an Axis, 783, American, AB3 or XPR.

Yes the Vanguard is a step up in many ways. I wish they were made in USA. Mine is amazing. Its a magnum so kind of a big heavy rifle.

No experience with the patriot.
I got my daughter the axis youth and had problems with it extracting and ejecting straight out of the box.
I returned it and got her a ruger american compact and have no issues.

I handled a patriot in a wood stock today along with an XPR in synthetic. I have to say I am impressed for the value.

That said said the Vanguard/Howa are definitely a step above.

It is amazing what kind of rifle a person can buy today for the cost of a case of 223 ammo.

I can't speak for either rifle. Both are from reputable companies. What I can speak for is my Stevens mod 200. No problems, no misses, no worries. Polymer stock many dislike, but I'm satisfied. You can probably find one used for around $200.

Too many people know they are the last of the "cheap" 10/110s, even GunBroker starts them in the 275-300 range

Not in the low cost segment, but I would say competitive with the Weatherby Vanguard - great rifles if a little weighty - and the Tikkas, I think the real value for money rifle at the moment is the T/C Venture. A much more conventional design than the rather odd Dimension was and better quality than the Compass, I think the Venture Weathershield in 270 Win or 7-08 would be about the best all around big game hunting rifle there is mid-market. If I could only come up with the thinnest excuse for a new rifle... (I have a non-Weathershield 270 and wish I had done the right thing...), but I have given myself a "no additional cartridges" rule and the only space in the stable is for a 444 Marlin repeater.

Feel the power of the dark side...

I bought a stainless Axis at Walmart about a year ago---it has a new style magazine and Accu-trigger ---price after the rebate was $236. I scoped it with a Leupold 3x9x40 Rifleman(also from Walmart) and QRW rings.

The new magazine is a huge improvement---was at the range the other day and a guy there had an older Axis----the mag was rattle-ly and would barely stay in the gun-----mine is solid and quiet

I haven't used the rifle much as its a back-up but its fairly accurate with cheap ammo and really don't see any problems coming up with it----perfect for my needs.
