I have an opportunity to purchase one of their 22LR barreled actions at a reduced price. Currently I am running a CZ455 which is doing well but I have always been intrigued by the 40X and this has me wondering if the Vudoo is worth the price of admission.

I will probably hang on to the 455 in case a girlfriend, etc wants to shoot with me.

never seen one in person but they look cool. i suppose it costs as least as much to mfg one of those as a custom centerfire action so the price seems inline with a centerfire build. i don't think there's much similarity to 40x

Long story short - I lust after them, but even considering a new NRL22/practice trainer in a 700 footprint, I’m leaning more towards a CZ in a Manners for the lower cost. Feels more logical to spend rimfire money on a rimfire rifle, even as illogical as that really is.

The first I saw in person were last spring. I hung out with the Armageddon Gear guys at NRAAM last year, and their booth/Truck was set up right beside the Vudoo’s. Perfect placement - I’ve been lusting over the idea of a Vudoo in a J.Allen chassis ever since (unfortunately, we’ll remain to see what MDT does with J.Allen assets). I’ve seen a couple others in Manners stocks since then (more sensible, if such a thing can be) at NRL22 matches here, and I know more and more guys getting into them around here.

Competition-wise, I don’t think your CZ is giving up anything to the Vudoo. Maybe a little wonky on magazines, but still not a major issue. The price difference can really only be justified, for me, by commonality with my centerfire match rifle - I see a lot of value in having identical rifles, even if I’m certain it’s faster and less destabilizing to run the Vudoo short throw, and doing so would absolutely cause me to choke my centerfire on the clock. If you were ONLY competing rimfire, then the advantage of commonality evaporated, and the extra cost is exceptionally hard to justify.

Admittedly, I’m anxious to put my eyes and hands on the new 700 footprint 22LR from Bergara. Not at all expecting it to be in the same class as the Vudoo, but it’ll have the 700 clone analogy, with a much lower cost. If they prove to be as accurate as the CZ’s, then I know I’ll buy one. If not, then it’ll be a budget cycle matter, dependent upon how long I can sit on a cashpile big enough to build a CZ, but not big enough to buy a Vudoo without running out of patience.

The Bergera looks like a nice solution as well.

I think what I really like about it is that I can have the identical trigger as my 700 pattern action.

Well, the many of the clones are darn good actions. Then, I could choose the barrel that I want, barrel contour, barrel length, chamber, headspace, ect.

I have a friend that just had a custom built. He is in it for under 2 grand complete with a Jewell trigger and custom stock.

I would rather have a good gunsmith put together a custom rifle using a 40x clone action.

the vudoo is basically that, call up the company and they will put whatever barrel you want, whatever stock you want with whatever finish you want. A barreled action is $1700+ Without a trigger or stock so dont discount the quality of this system, they shoot alongside the high end rigs all the time

Thanks for all the input.

I ended up making the purchase as the individual lowered the price even more and I could not pass it up. After debating for a few days about what stock and trigger to out on it, along came a sunny day with low wind yesterday.

I had a Grayboe stock sitting on the shelf from another rifle and a nicely tuned Remington 700 Walker trigger so I put them on. I sighted in using Automatch at 100 yards and 10 shots were barely inside of a 1" square. Could be a fluke as I have never had that kind of accuracy from Automatch before, typically around 2" with my CZ.

My friend was along with his Timney triggered M&P 15-22 so we setup some silhouettes at 75 yards. Body shots were too easy so I started aiming for the heads. I went 5 for 5.

The gun turned out noticeably heavier than my CZ 455 Tacticool, which has a 16" varmint profile barrel. As nice as the CZ is, everything about the Vudoo is a little nicer.

Awesome, I’m jealous. Hope you enjoy it and do your best to wear the barrel out (can that be done in a 22lr?)
Don't be jealous...go get one!

The CZ 455 was getting fed about 500-800 rounds a year. Most of the time I shoot Automatch through it on reactive targets, so pretty cheap compared to 223 or the bigger precision stuff. The CZ paid for itself in the first year. If I do precision target shooting, I pay quite a bit more for SK Standard but still a lot cheaper than match centerfire ammo.

I will eventually, there are many things on the list of expensive things I front of a $3k 22lr (barreled action chassis and scope)

Today I did a little comparison test between the Vudoo on the left, and CZ 455 on the right with SK Standard

23.5 yards (I accidentally set my target a little closer than I thought, was going for 25:eek:) Measured afterward with the rangefinder.

It doesn't look like 25 yards is far enough to see the difference between the two. It's funny because I always felt like the CZ was a really nice gun, and it shoots really well, but the Vudoo is sooo smooth.

Maybe a stupid question as I know less than nothing about match .22’s.....

For the same money as the Vudoo and the custom barrel, stock, and trigger, could you get an Anschutz? If so, how would the potential accuracy compare?

I’ve got a CZ 453. With Wolf Match Extra 50 yard one hole groups are fairly common. Just wondering what another $2,000 or so would buy me

I think the draw here is you can drop it in a stock or chassis that accepts Remington 700 SA style actions. Make it replicate your centerfire match gun.
Our V22 barreled action is built like no other! The ability for a 22LR or 17HM2 repeater to drop into any Remington 700 short action footprint hasn’t been available…..until now! This gives you, our customer, great flexibility in tapping into the vast aftermarket that exists around the Remington 700 platform.

It's like comparing a Porsche 911 to a Z28 Camaro. Why is the Porsche more money if they both have the same 0-60 times?

Solid point. I really like my CZ but the Vudoo feels much closer to a real rifle, and it has all the flexibility of accepting the same parts as the real thing.

The appeal is for that m700 full rifle feel/function to replicate people’s match guns. They also incorporated a nice controlled round feed system and magazines that minimize the potential for the bullet being dinged while feeding from the magazine, they also use the large swath of m700 triggers, not an Annie but I doubt they are inferior in any way (speaking from ignorance though)

I'm working from home today so I took a quick break at lunch and moved the target.

It's a little breezy today, weather app says 5-7 MPH and leaves are blowing around but I thought I would run a quick group to what happens.

Cold bore high left and then 4 more
