Concealed class

That's an excellent attitude going into it. Far too many people walking around carrying guns who just went to a basic concealed carry class and think that's sufficient. A 4 hour class is just beginning to scratch the surface, it's not going to be thorough. If you can possibly afford it, you should plan on spending at least $500 per year on training.
And at least that much on ammo for practice and training per year would be a good idea too.

Practice makes perfect, and shooting, especially fast aimed shooting, is a very perishable skill that needs regular maintenance, no matter your skill level.

I'm excited to learn more about the subject. I bet I'll learn a lot. I think we get to use the simulator also. Nervous about that.
It's a 4 hour class. I expect it to be very thorough.
As a retired LEO,and a former instructor for my agency in the qualification of firearms and defensive tactics.

I feel qualified enough to give this advice,TRAIN as if your very life was in the balance.

And treat the gun as if it were any other MARTIAL ART [ yes, that it is ].

And no one with any training in ANY martial art will tell you they are either an "expert" or fully trained.

It's a life time of training and good schools and GREAT instructors will help.

Ask around and get as many "opinions" as possible as to who you should learn from, then YOU decide.

I am still learning,and I just turned 72 !.

I'll definitely be taking more classes. I learned a lot that I didn't know. Then we got to use the simulator with real situations. Need to practice using my support hand more. Also learned even if your gun is locked in the car and you have to go in a school it's a felony because the gun is unattended. I learned much more but those were my personal biggest take aways.

As you go forward in your training, you should always back check information like this against the actual source. If the person providing the information cannot or will not provide the source, it's safe to say that the info is BS. Did the instructor supply the source for this info? I was unable to locate anything in VA law that says this.

Section 18.2-308.1 that talks about if you have a concealed carry permit that it's ok if you are in the car. It doesn't say more than that.

So I suppose anything else is a class 6 felony. I read the whole section. Fortunately I don't have school age kids.

I do not live in VA nor am I a lawyer, but here is a link to the VA statute that I think applies:

https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/18.2-308.1/

It looks like carrying with a permit while on school property and IN the vehicle is allowed, e.g. driving up to the door to drop your kid off. But I guess the issue the OP raises is the leaving of the weapon in the vehicle unattended.

There actually is a section in the code that allows unloaded long guns to be stored in the vehicle unattended while on school property, but I didn't see anything specifically regarding handguns loaded or otherwise. But I probably missed it... Someone else can "take a shot" if they like...

I read that. Like you, I didn't see anything in there that matches what the OP was told. Something that I emphasize to CHL students is that they need to back check anything they're told regarding firearms law with the source (this includes things that I tell them during the class). If a CHL instructor, gun store employee, cop or anyone else can't provide the source for the info, it's probably mostly internet myth.

No licence is needed to CC in AZ. We do have a licence if you want it for other reasons.

When I moved to Arizona in 2006, I scoffed at the idea of having to take a CCW class to get my permit. I'd grown up with guns and been carrying a pistol for 20 years.

Since the Gunsite Academy was only 15 miles away, and offered a CCW course for $125, I went there.

I can't remember if Jeff Cooper had passed at that point or not, but I know I didn't meet him, but I did meet his wife.

The class was very well done and I shelved my "I don't need this, I already know everything" attitude at the door. It was immensely helpful and I had a great time.

I recently tagged along to a new shooter class that my girlfriend attended and found it to be helpful as well. The other shooters were as green as could be and it was fun to watch them get over their fear of firearms and develop proper shooting techniques.

I signed up for a "concealed class" once but.... I never could find it!

Seriously though, they are GREAT ideas. In AZ you needn't hold a CCW to carry concealed however, if you DO have a valid CCW you need not wait on background checks as they apply.

Too, staying on top of the esoterica and minutiae offered by good instructors is ALWAYS worth the time and the little bit of expense.

Kind of like the NRA's ole "Hunter Safety Course". Needed? maybe not. A benefit for having attended? Almost always.

Definitely get more training than just your basic CHP course. That doesnt necessarily mean you have to take umpteen SD courses. Competition is a very worthwhile training supplement. I generally shoot 5 IDPA matches a month. Theres also dry practice you can do at home.

As far as your carry on school ground realization, you are right. You can carry as long as you're in youre vehicle on school property. Whether that be just sitting in your car in the parking lot or waiting in line to pick up a child. As you correctly said, once you leave the car you are not legally allowed to leave loaded guns in the car on the property.

As you're aware of our recent elections this is more than likely only going to get worse.

When I taught pistol marksmanship in college, firearms with live ammo weren't introduced until the 5th class. Each class was 3 hours long. I will never advocate for mandatory firearm classes to own/carry a firearm. But they are a good idea.

join a range that has league shooting at our range we have a come when you can every Tuesday shoot PPC corse 7 yards, 15 yards 25 yards you draw from holster (48 rounds) use what ever gun you have we due this twice but you can just due 1 or both then we shoot one hand bullseye 25 yards NMC corse twice use what ever gun you want (30 rounds ) then once we shoot a conceal carry 3 yards 7 yards and 15 yards you draw from holster (40 rounds you can come and shoot one or all fun good practice
