I shot a 10 point buck this week with my 358 Winchester. I’m always interested in how different cartridges and bullets perform. This time I was using the 180 grain Barnes ttsx. I’m not sure the velocity, but my 200 ttsx load is just under 2600 fps. The deer was shot just over 100 yards. The first shot was a spine shot, and he dropped in his tracks. I shot him again straight through the center of his chest from the bottom to his spine. I was shocked this (the second shot) remained in him, just under the skin by his spine.

Very nice! Both the deer and the bullet... but especially that deer. Great job!

Awesome looking mushroom, I haven't killed that many animals with X bullets and I've never recovered a bullet (all complete pass throughs), but that one sure looks perfect. Amazing that it stopped after penetrating mostly through soft lung tissue.

What rifle were you using?

Also, very nice buck, any idea of the weight?

Thanks guys.

That’s a nice deer you have there too Nature Boy.

Swampman, I was using a Nosler Liberty that started life as a .308 win. I sent it to JES to get it rebored into a 358 win with 3 groove rifling. After it came back, I cut the barrel down to 20” and recrowned it myself.

I am impressed with the 358 win so far. This is my first year with it. It hardly kicks. It can kill about anything. I think it should be far more popular. I think the same thing about the 338 Federal.

When I go out again to take my daughter (I’ll be the shooter), I have to figure out if I want to try e-tips for the first time in my 257 Weatherby or try the 358 again.

I don’t know what the deer weighed. It’s neck was huge, and its body was larger than average for here in southern Indiana.

I've been looking 15 years for a nice old Savage Model 99 in .358 to replace the one I stupidly traded off 30+ years ago.

That is picture-perfect! The .358 with monolithic bullets like that is certainly a capable round for anything you’ll see here in the US within 200-300 yds for sure.

I see you want to try the .257 WM, is the area you hunt woodsy, woods with cuts-openings or more open-field country?

Stay safe.

That’s the type of pictures and information I like to see. I think you can learn so much from the performance of different components.

RioMouse911, I don’t have a reason to use a caliber that will reach out like the 257 Weatherby. Where I live/hunt it is mostly wooded and hilly. A long shot is 100 yards, but I fell in love with the 257 after shooting one on a trip to Idaho. The thing is a laser. I was impressed with after shooting a large buck with 100 ttsx bullets and it was DRT, but after shooting a ram multiple times in the lower chest and it acting like it wasn’t hit, I started to question the bullet.
