Teen used ‘ghost gun’ in California high school shooting

I will guess that the anti position is similar to what the sheriff quoted in the article said, i.e.since anybody can buy gun parts (Is this true?) then minors, felons, adjudicated mentally ill, etc ( = prohibited persons) can obtain guns without going through a dealer.

All but the finished receiver, the part the BATFE deems 'the firearm'.
My local broadcast news was ranting about ghost guns and showing an AR-15 while talking about 45 caliber pistols.

If the firearm is manufactured or assembled from polymer plastic, 3.7 ounces of material type 17-4 PH stainless steel shall be embedded within the plastic

3.7 ounces? To put a serial number on? 3.7 ounces is not an inconsequential change to the weight of the weapon if we are talking about a handgun...

Not to mention the size.

Density = 0.282 Lbs. per cubic inch @ 68°F (annealed)

If I did my math right... that works out to be .82 CUBIC inches worth of stainless steel.

That's a lot for a serial #

Don't you imagine that's also for magnetometer detection? Can't have those plastic and ceramic guns getting past the metal detector.

"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play"

Unlike with the Lincoln assassination, there were no Red Flags, and I quote from the linked article.......
Authorities said Berhow had shown no signs of violence and didn’t appear to be linked to any ideology or terrorist group. He ran cross country, was a Boy Scout and had a girlfriend.

...one wonders was it bullying? Did someone steal that girlfriend? It seemed as if he targeted a set of people, counted his shots and saved the last one for himself. This is why these types of shootings will never be stopped, because while in some instances there are Red Flags, in just as many, there is nuttin'.

Personally, don't see the shooter as being capable of what is required to machine an 80% into an operational and functional firearm. Unless he had the skills and machinery to take 80% to 100%..
A radical Islamic suicide bomber doesn't build the bomb, a bomb maker does. IMO, I'd bet someone else finished the 20%. OTOH, I could easily be wrong; however, I don't think so.

The horse has left the barn on this even if the ATF doesn't like it.

There are plenty of small CNC and 3D printers out now that can print out receivers at the push of a button. Many are not even that expensive. They can use all sorts of steels, copper, titanium, etc.

Designs that were unmakable a decade ago can now be made in your garage.

Seems like they are trying to blur the lines between finished bare receivers, 80%s, regular parts and guns with defaced S/N.
Because this kid did not buy an 80% 1911 and turn it into a working gun buy him self.
I wouldn't even try to make a working 1911 out of an 80%.
Be way easier for me to just buy a finished 1911 frame and build it from there.

Plus when I I turned 16 I already had a 357 revolver and I never shot anyone.

Pretty safe to assume it was his father that may have assembled the firearm, and that the boy had a selection to choose from. Seems he could have done more damage with the firepower available to him, but chose only to target a few before killing himself. From the linked article.....
Berhow’s father was an avid hunter who died two years ago. He had six registered guns, but officials found several other unregistered firearms in the family home after the shooting and are working to determine their history.

The 6 other unregistered firearms does imply the father helped him.. Potentially, it could also mean the father had family firearms or firearms sold before the 1968 GCA's record keeping requirements.
The Gun Control Act of 1968 requires FFLs to keep and maintain acquisition and disposition records throughout course of business.

I'm retired; so, I remember the good old days of walk in and walk out firearms purchases.

I believe his father died several years ago, so he'd be completely out of the picture anyway.

'Ghost guns' is just another boogie man for the anti-2A crowd to scare their faithful and raise money. I expect 'High Capacity Magazines' and 'The Gunshow Loophole' weren't bringing money in like they used to.

Machining an 80% into a workable firearm requires more than an electric handle drill.

IMO, we all know high capacity magazines and the so-called gun show loop hole aren't doing what the Left wants anymore. Now, they go for what they really want which is full blown confiscation of all firearms in civilian possession.

Basically, it is all a game where they feed the sheeple as much bull manure they can.. All designed to scare the sheeple.

That story doesn't sound right at all. A "replica" gun? What is that? A 16 year old has the mechanical know-how and access to tools and equipment to finish an 80% receiver?

"Replica" gun -- Pretty much every news story I have ever read PROVES the liberal press doesn't know the first thing about guns and have absolutely no interest in presenting a factually correct report.

I have no doubt that a 16 year old could finish an 80% receiver! Maybe not every 16 yo or even most 16 year old's could but I have no doubt that some/several have the intelligence and skills to figure it out. With all the information and how to's available on the internet these days I don't think it would even be much of a challenge. When I was young we had to figure out how to make our own zip guns out of our own designs.

You make a good case, however, the serial numbers have never been about preventing a crime-they were always about investigating a crime.
So, in this case, if the gun had had a s/n, they've be able to find the first person who bought it from an FFL.
Having been involved, as a gun selling pawnbroker, in numerous ATF traces I'm aware of the process. A serial number isn't going to prevent a crime but the reason these get mentioned is that it appears to the general public that there is an easy other sourcing for guns than a gun shop with its attendant BR check and paperwork.

Besides, if a criminal wants a gun with no s/n, wouldn't it be much easier, cheaper, and faster to just take a die grinder to the receiver and grind the s/n away?

Depending on how much material is ground off, because of the molecular changes a stamping makes, many ground off serial numbers can be restored in the lab. And, some guns have hidden serial numbers. I don't know if Glock records all of the numbers they have liberally scattered all through the innards of their guns, but most illegally used guns are stolen anyway, what difference the serial number.

Have we actually seen the firearm in question or are we going on what the media and LEOs are saying? Both are notorious when it comes to firearms identification and understanding. I'm a LEO, I work for a pro-gun Sheriff and along side a great many pro-gun deputies, but not everyone knows what they are looking at sometimes. And while the sad state of mental health assistance in this country is a related topic, it is off topic for THR.
