Monday I should take delivery of a new-to-me 77 Hawkeye in .375 Ruger. I have no need for it, just wanted it. I have other rifles for hunting medium game and for long range targets. This will initially be a range toy, until I either build a load for deer hunting or decide to spring for a plains game safari. You get the idea: I have no specific application in mind for this one, other than scratch an itch.

So what kind of scope should I put on it? I have a Leupold 1.5-5X20 available at the low end, a 4.5-14X40 in the middle, both with 1-inch tubes. Also have a Vortex Viper HST 4-16X42 with a 30mm tube.

What do y’all sport on your medium bores?

VX3 2.5-8x36 on my 375 H&H. But I'd love to have a Mk6 HD 1-6 with the fire dot from Leupold. For close in snap shots that 1-6 with that blazing red dot is very hard to beat.

I took a basket 6 point whitetail buck with 2.5-8 a week ago about 2 mins before last shootable light and was still able to see my non-illuminated Boone and Crockett reticle and the deer without major issue at 6x.

Yes, that sounds perfect. I want to start out with what I already have, so the 1.5-5X will likely get the nod, though I might use the 4.5-14X for load development.

I'm using a leupy vx-3i 3.5-10x40 CDS on my Abolt
I prefer more power simply because I shoot this one quite a bit, sometimes at longer range. I'd probably run 4.5-14 if I had one.

2.5 - 8 VX3 has worked well for me with 375 Ruger and 375 H&H rifles. The lower powered scopes are great for dangerous game in thick cover but are limiting for other purposes. The 2.5X setting is very good for thick cover while the 8X setting allows the 375 to stretch it's legs. It is a very rugged and dependable scope.

I have a Zeiss Conquest MC 3-9x40mm with the RZ600 reticle on my .375 H&H Mag. The Zeiss reticle utility figured out that I need the magnification to be on 7.5X for the stadia to line up out to 600 yards with the load that I'm shooting and it works well. I shot and killed a mule deer at 465 yards a couple of years ago. Shot at him twice and hit him twice so I have a lot of confidence in my current setup. The bottom photo shows an 8" round target at 400 yards along with the RZ600 reticle. The only thing I'd change about the five Zeiss scopes I have which includes four of the older MC models and an HD5 3-15x44mm, all with RZ reticles, is to add illumination for those overcast days or situations that have poor contrast between the animal and reticle.

I'm not of the opinion that this rifle is just a dangerous game rifle. For me it's a good all around deer/elk rifle out to 600 yards with the right bullet. So far I've shot animals from 200 yards to 465 yards and it's worked well for that. Nothing survives for long when punched with a 250gr to 270gr .375 cal bullet that left the muzzle at around 2,800 fps.

yeah, that WOULD be a nice feature.
Ive taken my HD5 to just under 400 with the reticle and strelock/zeiss tool, using my load specs with no issues....while that isnt a FAR shot, its as far as Im willing to walk over lavarock, and with the reticle being less than 1" off at 2,3, and min of rock at just under 400 (RF could get a larger rock just over 4 and the 6"er i shot was a few yards in front of it), im comfortable with using the reticle and the tool.
Ya know, i might get another HD5 for my Abolt, tho its VX-3i is pretty sweet....
