M&P 15-22

I do not think they are a safe or well designed rifle. Too many out of battery discharges. That can happen with any 22 auto but happens way to much with the m&p.
I think they have this straightened out now. There was a recall for it, and my first gun was involved with that, and hadnt been done when I got it.

They had a bad batch of out of spec bolts that didnt have the face of the bolt cut right, and headspace was off, which was the issue. Part of the problem with mine when I first got it, and when it would run, was it was slamfiring on occasion and I was getting "bursts" out of it.

The new gun they sent me has been 100%, and I havent had one stoppage or problem of any kind since I got it.

If you have an older gun, or bought one used, I would call S&W and ask. They can tell you if the gun is in the recall, and/or will send you the gauge to check the headspace.

Their CS is pretty good, and if there is any question or concern, they will send you a return label and it wont cost you a thing. They even picked up the transfer cost on the second when they sent me the new gun. Their service department, I wasnt as happy with, but they finally got things done, and it didnt cost me a cent.

That's surprising to hear. I have at least 8k rounds through mine, and not even 1 fail to feed.

Unfortunately there seems to be some difficulty even after the recall. The changes to the bolt dimensions also don't seem to adequately explain the problems that people have experienced and different people have different problems (runaway "full auto", slamfires, out of battery discharges, etc.).

I should also say there are many rifles that seem to be trouble free. But no one's quite sure how to tell one from another, and it's not clear that S&W understands or has fixed the problem. I'm glad your new rifle is working well. However OP asked for my thoughts, and my thought is that there's trouble with the S&W, and numerous other 22 auto models with less trouble.

Had one for a couple of years. No problems with it if I kept it clean and lubed. Sold it before a move and found a new Mag after the move. Forgot all about it until I saw it in the garage the other day.

I remember this recall now, I had completely forgotten. The issue has been corrected. S&W told me that the production run with the defect was very small. Also, anything purchased new after Jan 2019 has a very small chance of being in scope. They sent me a little tool to check my bolt. If you do buy one, look for a red ink dot next to the upc on the box. That means it's already been inspected.

The M&P 15-22 remains banned for Appleseed events despite the recent recall. Smith and Wesson basically stopped communicating with Project Appleseed so that ban is likely to continue indefinitely.
