Crazy California Guns

Yes, I know the entertainment industry gets a lot of slack in all such respects.

Not everywhere. I used to watch Doctor Who in the Tom Baker regeneration. One season he was opposed by AGEs armed clearly with Steyr AUGs, even if they did have red and blue canisters attached to make them look more futuristic. That was the year of the Hungerford murders, after which autoloading rifles were banned. The next season, the same lot of AGEs was armed with toy AUGs, about 7/8 scale with fins and flanges molded in. Still had the red and blue canisters. So the studio did not get an exemption to keep Section 5 weapons for filming.

I knew a guy who owned a prop company that supplied ordnance to production companies.

He told me how they rented a ghost town for 2 months to rehearse the bank shootout for the film Heat.

They are full on class III, but there is more to it than that. They have to load up special blanks so that the timing of full auto fire matches the camera timing so they don't get the "backwards wagon wheel" that fails to show muzzle blast.
That means special loads matched to altitude AND barometric pressure.

Back then he was getting $1/ rd out of an MP5 (which also ran $500/day).

Fully semi-automatic bolt guns are a threat to this country from within. Especially if they use 30-mag round clips.

That is how we are able to import the Rhino. The factory makes a version that is SAO and it is available form your local FFL. You order the Conversion Kit from the factory and they just mail it to you

Well what's a bolt action rifle? What's a single shot Thompson Center handgun?

Now imagine that someone in California went to the local gunatorium and bought a new Glock 17 or 19 or whatever (which you can do in Cali.) cut it up and converted it into a Thompson Center or Remington, single shot bolt action pistol. Where you loaded the bullet manually. Closed the bolt, fired the gun and then pulled the bolt back to eject the empty case like a bolt action rifle.

Someone may have done this at some point in time. Why I don't know. Because they could I guess. You can buy Glocks off the shelf here, new and used, so it's not because you can't get a Glock. Likely it's because they just wanted to. If it happened at all.

Seriously, I don't live in CA but is it really helpful to make derogatory comments about people who live there, particularly since we have quite a few folks here who do?

I know what a single shot pistol is, and what a bolt action is. That is why I thought that what the OP was asking ("I just heard that people in California are building single shot, bolt action Glocks to get around the insane laws there. Has anyone else heard of this or is it just a bunch of nonsense?") was hyperbole. But I also have learned many times here on TheHighRoad that I do not know everything, so I thought I would ask. So far, it does seem to be hyperbole, but I have learned about what people are actually doing in California because of the gun laws there, and that is interesting. I guess I am just not a fan of hyperbole when it comes to gun laws.

Opps my bad, $500-$800 depending on model. There are literally millions of good people in Ca. Shooting/hunting are still huge sports in the state. People are used to working around the laws. In the past there have been some mile wide loopholes.

There are plenty of used "off roster" handguns being sold here every day. I bought a 66-1 in July for $500.00 at Turner's Outdoorsman's San Bernardino store. I purchased my M-17-3, Ruger Mk II Govt and M-13 .357 used as well at Annie's (Now it's known by another name) in Corona. Once a person decides to sell a handgun, unless it's outright banned due to the pathetic "assault weapon" laws it's OK to sell through an FFL (Either consigned or as a private party sale using the FFL for the paperwork/wait period.).

Trust me, if my wife and I could make even 3/4 of what we make here now we would move. Since both of us would be very lucky to make even 1/2 of it, I have three kids to put through college so I'm here until my kids are grown.

Exactly, although I scored a sweet 586-3 at a good price and it appeared to have less than a hundred rounds through it at a local gun shop. Most of the quality older revolvers have a 200-400 premium.

I choose to light a lamp rather than curse the darkness. The CA roster guns here make me realize that the guns I brought with me are good enough. Since I’ve moved here I shoot more often than I ever have.
