All.... after giving up on my lyman turret primer feed system, I finally called them and three days later got a package with a new complete priming system. Same as the old one except that the new one had a plastic rod that goes into the primer tube to push the primers down the tube. It works ALOT better than without the rod. Lyman must have realized the issue and added the tube. Surer glad they did!

Every press company that uses a vertical tube system for priming uses a rod for weight on the primers in it. Without the rod that type of system is just misery. If you want to go an extra step, put some kind of weight on the rod and you will never have trouble with primers not feeding again.
RCBS and Hornady and Dillon already knew this.
If Lyman sold you a tube priming system without the rod for weight, then shame on them. They don't even have to engineer it, all they had to do was look at what RCBS and Hornady, and Dillon are doing for a priming system and they should have known they needed a rod follower.
Lyman should have sent you an apology with the new priming assy also. Not sending a rod with the original system is ridiculous.

Jeff,
Thanks for letting us know. I also have a Lyman American 8 press. The priming system issue was so frustrating that I purchased a Frankford Arsenal Priming kit. I basically deprime the cases and then prime them separately before completing cartridge reloading on the press. After reading your post, I went ahead and submitted a ticket request through the Lyman website in hopes of getting a weighted rod. It would be nice to use the priming system on the press. Thanks again.

I use a metal rod from a fireworks sparkler as a weight on my RCBS bench primer.

No problem! I don't know why one wasn't in the original box when I bought the press!

Update. I emailed Lyman and explained that I was not provided a Fiberglass rod to push the primers down. They were quick to respond and sent me a fiberglass rod straightaway. Excellent customer service Lyman.
Good deal! Now please tell me how to keep the priming assembly (little rod and cup that pushes the primer into the case) from coming out after about 15 rounds. ??? The entire priming assembly has to be taken off the press and the primer rod put back onto the hole and then the small allen screw r screwed into the hole. Then repeat after about 15 more......

Jeff
I tightened the allen head screw real tight. I did notice that the small rod has a flat side to it and is not completely round. I made sure the flat side was where the screw pressed on when tightening. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I too saw the flat spot on the primer arm. It's right where it's supposed to be. And I tightened the set screw as tight as could without stripping something! It still comes loose after about 15 rounds o so....

I have been using a 6 hole Lyman without a follower rod for many years, never knew there was a problem. What am I doing wrong?

I've never had a primer getting hang up in the tube either without a follower rod. I do keep the tube very clean by frequently running a tight patch with denatured alcohol through the tube a couple times.
I can see though how a follower rod is handy in seeing how many primers are in the tube, perhaps I'll start using one.

I put a small ring around my follower that comes to the top of the primer tube when the tube is empty

This is an interesting thread. In the past 3 or so weeks, since setting up my All American 8, I’ve primed over 1,000 cases, 1/2 .380ACP, 1/2 9mm. I’ve had the primer cup shoot off twice...no other issues. I don’t have a follower, weighted or otherwise sitting in my primer tube. I may have stripped my Allen the last time I reassembled the priming arm, but it hasn’t popped of again...yet.
I had some difficulty with primers feeding upside down when I first started...turned out that I was using the large tube with small primers. No glitches since using the proper tube. I labeled them with a Sharpie to avoid the issue in the future.

I got this press for Christmas. Nothing but problems with the inline primer system. That primer rod pushes past the set screw and goes In too deep causing the primers not to be flush. You have to take it out and reset the primer rod over and over. I starting taking pieces of plastic insulation and stuffing the hole the primer rod sits in so the rod won’t slip too deep. When it works, it works awesome but too many flaws with this set up.

I eventually started priming cases with a Frankford Arsenal primer. I know it requires a different product, but for me, it turned out to be faster. It does work more efficiently and faster with the large primers, so I just tightened everything up and keep the large primer setup on it while using the Frankford arsenal priming system for the small primers.

THe other plus with using a separate priming system is that you're not bound to being where the press is at. I'll deprime 100 cases then goto the living room and prime them while watching TV.

Interesting, I use an PCBS bench primer and do not have a follower rod.

I suppose if all you guys are using them I should contact RCBS and buy one. Anyone know the part number?

To everyone that stripped (or believe they did), the set screw for the primer punch, Lyman responded quickly to a note on their website and sent me a new arm and set screw. It’s the same size, so too bad about that, but it’s a new pair. Shipping took 3 weeks after commitment, but everything’s taking longer these days.
