I know when the 3 inch models were released a few years back there were several quality issues reported here and elsewhere. Anyone have any info that these were addressed and corrected by Ruger or are there still many issues? I like the .44 special a lot and would like to add another just for camping and woods etc. My 7.5 in. Redhawk isn't real handy on the hip and my S&W 696 only has 5 rounds through it which I prefer not to carry around.

Any knowledge about the quality of the later offerings would be appreciated. Thanks.

My Ruger 44 Special GP100's, 3" and 5" barrels, have been well made and trouble free. Both purchased early in the production run.

Why in the hell don't they make it in 44 mag.
Over built, built like a tank, all this smoke being blown up our rears and Smith & Wesson out does them by putting the 44 mag in an L frame.

Just a guess but if the trim little GP100 was available in .44 mag who would buy the standard Redhawk?
Well IF a gp was avail in 44mag, it would be light weight and have a short cylinder. So heavy bullets would probably not fit length wise and it wouldn't be that fun to shoot recoil wise. Assuming it would be about 38-44oz or so depending on barrel length, the redhawk would be about 10-16oz heavier. So like the model 69 it would be a niche revolver and plenty of the full-size Redhawks would still sell.

The existing L-frame has the same limitations as the GP. Which is why S&W re-engineered the L-frame to accommodate the .44Mag. They beefed up the frontal area of the frame and enlarged the barrel shank. Which is exactly what Ruger would have to do.

No issues with my .44 GP's.

By coincidence I was thinking about getting a GP100 in .44 Special to go with my Flattop Blackhawk .44 Special. The hard part is deciding what barrel length to get.

Every time you post that picture I find myself heading to Gunbroker looking for one just like it.

Sorry about that!

Well you might find one that looks like it with the factory plastic grips but I can guarantee you won't find one with those grips on it!

I have always loved the look of white/ivory colored grips on a blued gun!

I checked out a GP-100 44 spl at the LGS the cylinder throats measured .433" to big for my liking.

Ruger is eating everyone’s lunch with these revolvers, no other manufacturer can compare, imo.

I’m willing to bet the Model 69 can’t stand up a steady diet of heavy .44 Mag loads. Haven’t tested my theory but will bet that’s the case.

I bet someone’s hand wouldn’t stand up to heavy 44 mags in an M69 either.

That’d be strictly a warm special or light magnum only gun for me. I’m not recoil shy either, but I just picture heavy magnums beating the crap out of you in that size gun. Not fun. I’ve thought about picking up a 69 but haven’t bit yet.

I've shot 2 629s loose and had/have a SBH and Contender 44s so I have shot the hot 44 mags a lot. I now have a 69 too and I don't attempt to hot rod it at all! it's a nice little package for when I'm up in the mountains.

I have a super red hawk and it's just too big for me to want to hike around with. Nice when shooting 310 grain bullets.
I "need" a packable size 44 mag.

Got both of the current 44’s that can handle heavy loads. The S&W model 69 will handle 44 magnums and the Ruger GP100 is rated 44 special +P. I run Buffalo Bore heavy 44 Specials.

I have both of these as well. Really like them both. I've never felt the need to hot rod a 44 magnum. It seems to me if you need more gun you should get a 454.
