New Production Walther PPK & PPK/s

FWIW, I've owned two FEG "clones" of the PP and they are both excellent. My FiL somehow talked me out of the first one, so I replaced it soon afterwards. I think the first one was $199 from AIM, and the second was $225 or so from GB. They have aluminum frames and are chambered in 32acp. I also have the steel-framed PPK version in 380acp. It's not as pleasant to shoot, though not terrible. It also cost $250 or less and works just fine.

If anyone wants a PP or PPK and can't easily afford one, the FEG's seem to be a pretty good substitute (I like their Hi Powers also).

The Sig P230 is also nice. It seems like a slightly upgraded PP. I agree that the heel magazine release is annoying, though.

My Russian Makarov kind of seems like a simplified or slightly downgraded PP. It's functioned perfectly since I got it brand-new in 1988 though, so I really can't complain.

I personally *like* the heel mag release.

Please forgive the thread drift...

I think the biggest thing that got me away from the PPK and it's ilk was when Colt came out with the Government Model .380. Here was a pocket size pistol that had little in the way of felt recoil, was a nice size and weight, would reliably feed both FMJ and JHP ammo, and had a decent SA trigger on it. The only thing I thought that could make it even better was if it was still a little bit smaller. Well Colt must have been thinking the same thing because soon thereafter they came out with the Mustang and I became it's biggest fan! I liked it so much that I went and bought a SIG P238 to keep it company (actually the prices had risen so much on the Mustang that I really didn't want to spend that kind of money on another one)!

I have never heard anything but very high opinions of the P238. I have the PPK because I want the PPK specifically ; if i were simply choosing an excellent 380 I would look hard at that Sig. Looking at the Colt and the Sig , they sure have some common ground.

If cocked and locked doesnt bother you, then yes, all of the Mustang-derived guns are a fine concealed carry choice. Ive had 2 Colts and the P238. I would probably still take a P232 over the P238 though, and I would take either over the Walther.

The Kimber MicroCarry and Springfield 911are also essentially the same gun as the Mustang and P238.

Mr. Mosin

My Mustang is an early one and has a steel frame (but doesn't even feel all that heavy). Current Colt Mustangs (Lite and Pocketlite), use polymer frames and aluminum alloy frames.

Same with my Colt Officer's Model ACP; all steel though here you can definitely tell the difference in weight compared to the aluminum alloy frame version! Never saw too many of the lightweight versions so I picked up the all steel model. It has a definite preference for 185 gr. and 200 gr. loads though I think it's bark is worse than it's bite!

My bud has an FEG in 9x18 and that little sucker is a handful to shoot. The real Makarov I used to own and stupidly sold didn't seem to be near as bad to shoot. I had the version with the adjustable rear sight. And it was dead nuts reliable. It never jammed or failed to function. If I were looking for a steel pocket pistol my hunt would be for another Mak or an Astra Constable. I had one of those too in the past. Also an excellent PPK knock off.

I'd love a Makarov. Rechamber it though. Not hunting for 9x18 Mak.

If I were financially invested in the production of the new PPK I would not like the way this thread is trending.

You can get replacement barrels in 380 for the Mak. And some come in 380. And as far as I know you can still get 9x18 surplus ammo way cheaper than 380 ammo. I just bought a Taurus TCP and was shocked at what 380 ammo cost. I would rather have a compact 9mm than a 380 just because I can buy 9mm ammo so much cheaper. And the 9mm is a better round overall.

How so? Because the OP inquiry was about the quality and reliability of the new PPK , and the thread drift is about the advantages of alternatives to that pistol.

My Makarov is a Russian "commercial" version chambered in 380acp. Even though it's blowback, it's also steel and heavy enough that the recoil is mild. They aren't hard to find on GB, if you wanted a Mak, but in an easy to find caliber. It cost me $89 brand-new, back in the day. :)

The lightest recoil I've ever felt in a 380 is my Colt Government Model. It's medium-sized, steel, and has a locking breech. My daughter dislikes recoil to this day (even though she's 6'2" and strong), but she has been shooting the Government Model since she was eight or nine and it has never bothered her.

You can see the adjustable sights on the "commercial" Makarov. They are not ideal for carry, but they do help its accuracy.

Everyone who shoots my Government Model likes it. I am not a big fan of "cocked and locked", but would still carry it instead of a PP every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Meh. I still desire a PPK. DA/SA, smaller than any if the Beretta 80 series.

Mr. Mosin

I do apologize again for the non-PPK thread drift!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread already in progress!

My wife has an Interarms PPK/S and it's a sweet shooting gun. No problem hitting point of aim, feels awesome in my palm, and reeeeeal purty!

I tried to talk her into giving it to me.

"GET YOUR OWN!"

That right there, gentlemen, is called "permission"!

:D:D:D

I like the beavertail on this one. I don't find it a detraction from the visual appearance at all.

I found my wife's PPK/S to be a "hard hitter" in my hand, right in the meaty portion between my thumb and trigger finger. I attribute that to the fixed barrel design of the pistol. I didn't find it off-putting, but if I were running several boxes down range I'd end up feeling it.

I like the solid feel of the gun in my hand, too.

The double action trigger pull is strong. The safety is "stiff" to say the least. And the slide spring is surprisingly strong as well. My wife had problems because of this...but by golly, that's her Bond gun and she doesn't care!

Now that it's back in production, I believe 2020 may be the year I get my own. In black, of course.

I wish Walther would re-introduce the 32 ACP PPK. I'd like to have one. I've been watching for a used one but have not found one yet in my part of the world.

I have a 380 ACP PPK and it shoots fine but I prefer shooting my 32 ACP PP or my 32 ACP PPK/s.

A 32 ACP PPK would be the best of all worlds concerning conceal ability, function ability, and capability.

Remember, a hit with anything trumps a miss with anything bigger.
