I ordered a shipping label for a pistol I sold. Does Bud's Gun Shop e-mail the shipping label or mail it to you. Their website isn't very clear on that. I asked that question through their website and haven't received an answer.

Bud's Gun Shop is the outfit that does the Ship My Guns. They e-mail you a UPS label for 2 day delivery of a hand gun, slap it on the box and take it to your UPS service center, not the UPS Store. Due to amount of shipping Bud's does through UPS they get a cut rate price. The label provided to you uses Bud's account which allows you to take advantage of their reduced shipping rate. It cost me $41.70 to ship a pistol to Ohio.

I was under the impression that handguns could only be shipped by an FFL.

Maybe that was just through USPS.

Correct. UPS and Fedex allow you to ship a gun through them - it must be to an FFL/manufacturer and it must go air because they no longer trust their employees not to steal them

My local dealer will ship for you for $25, which is at least half of what UPS or FedEx ship for.

Maybe theres a similar option available for you.

<----FFL who beats the pants off "Ship My Gun" prices several times per week.
(as can any FFL who ships a handgun via USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Box)

..... and it must go air because they no longer trust their employees not to steal them
Yet UPS and FedEx permit firearms other than handguns (rifles, shotguns, AR lowers, frames, receivers, PGO shotguns) to ship via GROUND.
Where the myth of "they don't trust their employees" started is a myth not grounded in fact......it's about the money.

As someone who spent a summer or two while being a teacher working for UPS, it is about the theft rate; back in the day I watched a lot of guns come through ground service as I loaded trucks. (Having a kitchen table FFL at the time, I recognized the names). And while everyone went through a security screening, once that truck left the yard, things easily went "missing", especially small boxes with handguns.

I've yet to see anything from FedEx or UPS saying it's because their employees steal.
I agree, small boxes would be easy to disappear. Time in transit may also increase the opportunity for any package to get stolen, damaged or lost. But if it's fear of small boxes being stolen, FedEx/UPS would extend the Overnight/Next Day requirements to all firearms shipped in small boxes.......they haven't.

The gun shops around here want $50. There is an FFL like dogtown tom that I have used twice to receive firearms, I didn't know that he would also ship them until after I paid for Ship My Gun. Next hand gun goes through him but he charges $20 for handling plus shipping which ends up being close to what I paid for Ship My Gun.

You need a better FFL.;)

Is that with insurance?

In my 15 years holding an 01 I dont recall ever using the flatrate option....it always cost more than just sending priority.

However, I would suspect you probably handle more firearm transactions in a month than I did in an average year, so it probably averages out in the end.

Postage depends on weight/box dimensions/distance. Example, four pound shipment, Adult Signature on delivery: (no insurance for calculating postage only) as an example:
If you are shipping Dallas-----> Houston it's $16.55 for Priority Mail using your own box.
Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate Box is $20.75
But, Dallas-----> LA is higher......Priority Mail w/ your own box: $22.85

Oftentimes the Priority Mail Regional Flat Rate boxes A or B are cheaper than using Large or Medium FRB's. The "B" is larger than the Medium FRB and the "A" is a bit smaller. You won't find those at your local post office but must order them from usps.com

The one time I used them my label was for FedEx.

Bud's flips flops on using FedEx vs UPS. Every year or so UPS threatens to raise their rates and Buds jumps to FedEx for a few months. That UPS account rep realizes what a cash cow he's missing and magically, Bud's returns to UPS.

Bud's does such a high volume that they get massively discounted rates for shipping Next Day. Nothing like what you or I would pay.

I have used regional boxes a few times, my local PO doesnt carry a very good selection or quantity of shipping packages, so I have placed a handfull of box orders
