Taurus 856 .38 Spl +P
6-Shot Snubbie

At $174.99 for Black Oxide Steel (22 oz) or $199.99 for Natural Anodized Aluminum / Stainless (16 oz) I'm tempted.

A buddy bought one of the $175 guns and it locks up tight, has a decent trigger and doesn't spit lead.

Anyone else got one? An example of one doesn't mean anything.

Not an 856 but I bet my life (potentially) on a Taurus 85 Ultra lite every day.
I shoot it frequently and have never had a failure. Still locks up tight and is in perfect timing. No lead spitting.

Those are pretty good prices! Is this at a local gun shop or is it an online purchase? I ask because I have found with some Taurus revolvers it's definitely best if you can check them out (trigger pull, cylinder play, and overall fit and finish), before you buy it.

Our 85 - which as I understand it is the 5 round precursor to the 856 - has been an OUTSTANDING little beast.

We have had it so long that we don't actually recall when we originally got it.... Late 80's? Whenever they were still making 4-screws at the least.

It is always loaded and always relied upon completely. Has shot most anything well - as long as we remember it's a 2 incher with barely existent sights.

We have neglected the tar outa this thing and it never fails. Dropped in; mud, snow, sand.....

What I will say is what I say to every potential Taurus owner; Pick favored ammo and shoot the bejeepers outa it right away and if you are in any way dissatisfied - exercise Taurus' warranty program immediately. I've personally known few to be returned and never known one to go back twice. Generally, prices and basic quality have made this a consideration of little note to me. Smiths & Rugers going back as much as they do tends to balance the biases out too.

Now, the price you quote... Hell, buy TWO!

FWIW, I recall a gunsmith posting that the ultralight (aluminum) versions could have some trouble with peening around the firing pin area, though perhaps this was eventually improved/eliminated. He endorsed the steel models.

I have owned three of the five-shot (Model 85) versions and they all went bang every time. One had a great trigger, one was okay, and one was stiff.

I am not at all a Taurus fanboy, but they have been making the Model 85 derivatives for a long time now, and they generally have a good reputation. I wouldn't feel unarmed with one.

I have the all stainless model (856). I like it a lot - and would by another at that price just to have two.
