"Grey Beard"

He was nine years old when his folks left home
On a wagon headin' west
And his mom and dad knew he'd grow up bad
By the mark of the devil on his chest

Seventeen he turned up mean
He had already made his bid
He had a name in the fast gun game
And they called him the "Devil Kid"

Now the kid's name grew and his gun did too
When an old ghost town appeared
Sittin' there in the marshall's chair
Was the one they called "Grey Beard"

"Kid, you better quit while the quittin's good
Cus there's always one that's bigger
There'll be one guy with a faster eye
Who's lightning on the trigger

Let me tell you, son, about a real fast gun
That every outlaw feared
He made his name in this killin' game
He's the one they call "Grey Beard"

He had a drawin' hand like no other man
It was faster than the eye
And there were always plenty of kids about twenty
Just couldn't wait to die

He was a fast gun
Lookin' to make a name
Quikin' was his virtue
Killin' was the game

So the kid said, "Tell me,
where is this man who never feared a gun?"
Grey Beard raised his head and said,
"Your looking at him, son."

So the kid tried staring Grey Beard down
With eyes like ace up dice
And Grey Beard's frown turned upside down
To a smile as cold as ice

So the Devil Kid reached for his gun
With a draw as fast as light
But he lost the game from a shot that came
From somewhere out of sight

And as the kid went down and he hit the ground
Thought he had lost his mind
He heard Grey Beard snicker
"I was even quicker before I went stone blind"

Fast gun
Lookin' to make a name
Quikin' was his virtue
He was killed at his game

Queen- Bohemian Rhapsody

Mama, just killed a man
Put a gun against his head
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead
Mama, life had just begun
But now I've gone and thrown it all away
Mama, ooh
Didn't mean to make you cry
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow
Carry on, carry on
As if nothing really matters
Too late, my time has come
Sends shivers down my spine
Body's aching all the time
Goodbye everybody, I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
Mama, ooh
I don't want to die
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all

They say he loved adventure, "Ricky's the wild one"
He married trouble and had a courtship with a gun
Bang bang, shoot 'em up, the party never ends
You can't think of dying when the bottle's your best friend
-18 and life by Skid Row-

"The Trooper"

You'll take my life but I'll take yours too
You'll fire your musket but I'll run you through
So when you're waiting for the next attack
You'd better stand, there's no turning back

The Bugle sounds and the charge begins
But on this battlefield no one wins
The smell of acrid smoke and horses breath
As I plunge on into certain death

The horse he sweats with fear, we break to run
The mighty roar of the Russian guns
And as we race towards the human wall
The screams of pain as my comrades fall

We hurdle bodies that lay on the ground
And the Russians fire another round
We get so near yet so far away
We won't live to fight another day

We get so close near enough to fight
When a Russian gets me in his sights
He pulls the trigger and I feel the blow
A burst of rounds take my horse below

And as I lay there gazing at the sky
My body's numb and my throat is dry
And as I lay forgotten and alone
Without a tear I draw my parting groan

I love this song!!

Wow I had no idea there were so many, lots of great songs. Still here's my favorite by far, It hits close to home, tugs at my heart, I've got some very special ones in my safe.

This is one that is a little different. The song is from the guns point of view. Not a big rap fan, but the lyrics are well done and unlike anything I've heard before.

Jimi Hendrix - "Machine Gun"

lbJiV2v.jpg

"Happy new year first of all. I hope we'll have million or two million more of them... if we can get over this summer, ha ha ha. I'd like to dedicate this one to the draggin' scene that's goin' on. All the soldiers that are fightin' in Chicago, Milwaukee and New York... Oh yes, and all the soldiers fightin' in Vietnam. I'd like to do a thing called "Machine Gun"

Machine gun
Tearing my body all apart
Machine gun
Tearing my body all apart

Evil man make me kill ya
Evil man make you kill me
Evil man make me kill you
Even though we're only families apart
Well I pick up my axe and fight like a farmer
(You know what I mean)
Hey and your bullets keep knocking me down
Hey I pick up my axe and fight like a farmer now
Yeah but you still blast me down to the ground
The same way you shoot me down baby
You'll be going just the same
Three times the pain
And your own self to blame
Hey machine gun
I ain't afraid of your mess no more, babe
I ain't afraid no more
After a while your cheap talk don't even cause me pain
So let your bullets fly like rain
Cause I know all the time you're wrong baby
And you'll be goin' just the same

Yeah machine gun
Tearing my family apart
Yeah yeah alright
Tearing my family apart

Don't you shoot him down
He's about to leave here
Don't you shoot him down
He's got to stay here
He ain't going nowhere
He's been shot down to the ground
Where he can't survive, no no

Yeah that's what we don't wanna hear any more, alright
No bullets
At least here, huh huh
No guns, no bombs

Although it refers to a different type of bullets than we're accustomed to, I always liked the title of Lynrd Skynrd's "Gimme back my bullets". Allman Brothers' Ramblin Man also related that the father "wound up on on the wrong end of a gun". Then there's Warren Zevon's "Send Lawyers Guns and Money".
^ Not to mention Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner.;)

Well there's Jethro Tull "I'm Your Gun", and my personal fav's Metallica's "Ronny" :
Now we all know why
Children call him Ronnie Frown
When he pulled that gun from his pocket
And they all fall down, down, down

another is Youthanasia by Megadeth:
Who'd believe we spend more shippin' drugs and guns
Than educate our sons?,
Sorry that's what they did...

When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings

Song by Tim Blake Nelson and Willie Watson

Let me tell you, buddy
There's a faster gun
Coming over younder
When tomorrow comes

Let me tell you, buddy
And it win't be long
Till you find yourself singing
Your last cowboy song

Yippee-ki-yi-yay
When the roundup ends
Yippee-ki-yi-yay
And the campfire dims

Yippee-ki-yi-yay
He shalt be saved
When a cowboy trades
His spurs for wings

When the wrap my body
In the thin linen sheet
And they take my six ounce
Pull the boots from my feet

Unsaffle my pony
She'll be itching to roam
I'll be halfway to heaven
Under horsepower of my own

Yippee-ki-yi-yay
When the roundup ends
Yippee-ki-yi-yay
And the campfire dims

Yippee-ki-yi-yay
He shalt be saved
When a cowboy trades
His spurs for wings

Yippee-ki-yi-yay
I'm glory bound
No more jingle jangle
I lay my guns down

Yippee-ki-yi-yay
He shalt be saved

When a cowboy trades
His spurs for wings

Jeannie Needs a Shooter -- Warren Zevon

I was born down by the river
Where the dirty water flows
And the cold wind cut through me
It cut right through my clothes
And the anger and the yearning
Like fever in my veins
Set the fire burning

She came down from Knightstown
With her hands hard from the line
From the first time I laid eyes on her
I knew that she'd be mine
Her father was a lawman
He swore he'd shoot me dead
Cause he knew I wanted Jeannie
And I'd have her like I said

Jeannie needs a shooter
Shooter like me
Jeannie needs a shooter
Shooter on her side
Jeannie needs a shooter

We met down by the river
On the final day in May
And when I leaned down to kiss her
She did not turn away
I drew out all my money
And together we did vow
To leave that very evening
And get away somehow

Jeannie needs a shooter
Shooter like me
Jeannie needs a shooter
Shooter on her side
Jeannie needs a shooter

The night was cold and rainy
Down by the riverside
I was riding hard to meet her
When a shot rang out behind
As I lay there in the darkness
With a pistol by my side
Jeannie and her father rode off into the night

Jeannie needs a shooter

guns on the roof -- the clash

I swear by Almighty God
To tell the whole truth
And nothing but the truth

Guns guns, guns guns
Guns guns, guns guns

They torture all the women and children
Then they've put the men to the gun
Cause across the human frontier
Freedom's always on the run

Guns guns shaking in terror
Guns guns killing in error
Guns guns, guilty hands
Guns guns shatter the lands

A system built by the sweat of the many
Creates assassins to kill off the few
Take any place and call it a court house
This is a place where no judge can stand

Sue the lawyers and burn all the papers
Unlock the key of the legal rapers
A jury of a billion faces
Shouted out condemned out of hand

Guns guns, and nobody's kidding
Guns guns, or fooling around
Guns guns, the violence is singing
Guns guns, a silence the sound

And I like to be in Africa
A-beating on the final drum
And I like to be in U.S.S.R.
Making sure these things will come

And I like to be in U.S.A.
Pretending that the wars are done
And I like to be in Europa
Saying goodbye to everyone

Guns guns
There's guns on the roof
Guns guns
They're made to shoot

Over There
Great footage:

Johnnie, get your gun
Get your gun, get your gun
Take it on the run
On the run, on the run
Hear them calling, you and me
Every son of liberty
Hurry right away
No delay, go today
Make your daddy glad
To have had such a lad
Tell your sweetheart not to pine
To be proud her boy's in line

КАТЮША текст Russian song from WWII
Great footage:

Good thread idea. I've heard a lot of these, some forgotten, some new, but all enjoyable.

This is one of the most haunting songs ever. It was originally a poem written after WW-1 in memory of a Scottish soldier who lost his life in the war. Later put to music. Many may have not heard the song in entirety, but if you saw the movie "We Were Soldiers" you will recognize the music which was used as background music during several scenes
