Looking for a first auto. No polymer stuff. Large cap would be ideal. Rail for a light a must. Reliability a must. Ranch carry and bedside duty. 9mm because cheap ammo, no reloading, and I plan on shooting the gun often. Weight no issue. Don't mind spending real money on the gun but don't want a gun with crazy magazine prices. Ain't bought a gun in many moons so I will spend some money on the right one. So far I've looked at:

Cz75 sp-01 tactical, cz75 shadow 2, Sig Legion, RIA 1911 tac models, Taurus 1911, Beretta M9/Taurus PT92. Not sure what else I ought to consider. EAA has a bunch of models. I haven't browsed them all. Everytime I've touched a cz I liked it. The Taurus is $429 at academy and has good feedback, I could just buy cases of ammo.and a stack of mags. Never seen the legion in person. Cz shadow will get me in trouble at home at 1200 bucks but it looks worth risking a divorce. The RIA tac stuff looks good but is it reliable out of the box? I don't want to fool with anything with indeterminate break-ins, just unbox and shoot.

I come from a revolver world so I dont have a single action/double action or striker fired preferences. I just want steel, rail, a decent trigger, reliability, and as many 9mms as I can fit in the mag.

Get an SP-01, then later when you can sneak it under the divorce radar, get a Cajun Gun Works Pro Package https://cajungunworks.com/product/75664-pro-package-for-decockers/ (or the one for safety gun if you go with a safety). If you want to convert to Single-action-only at some point, you'll need to get the safety gun instead of the decocker.

IME, the above SP-01 path will give you a BETTER action and trigger than the factory Shadow, and you'll have your full-size steel, 18+1 rounds, and a rail, AND your marriage intact. :)

My SP-01 is a fantastically accurate shooter, so I really question whether a Shadow or a worked gun would shoot any better in my hands. I assume accuracy is a little bit more of a luck-of-the-draw with a standard gun than with a Shadow or higher level gun, but my SP-01 leaves little room for improvement, and I've read the same from quite a few other people.

Is yours a single action only or a decocker model?

No polymer because a gun needs a bit of weight to keep it steady. Polymer too much of a good thing maybe. Polymer is popular because it is light to carry. I carry and understand that.

Polymer is trendy now and there is big money to be made from the gun manufactures selling polymer. Me, I just want something reliable and shoots good.

There are things made with polymer parts (0ther than guns) that are not desirable. Lot of gun forums rag on MIM. I'll take MIM over polymer any day.

Guess my answer would be Taurus PT92 and Tanfoglio Witness. I own one of each and of all my guns they are my favorites. The Taurus is 9mm and the Witness is 45acp. The Witness was imported 12/08/92 and the Taurus was imported 12/98... Those two guns go with me everywhere and I now want a metal Witness 9mm.

For an all around basic defensive/fun handgun that has a known durability record and fair price.

Either a Beretta 92 variant, SIG P22x variant or a CZ 75 variant. Any and all will do you just fine.

Are you asking for an all steel gun or are you asking for an all metal gun? Many of the guns you have listed are not all steel. Sig Legion P226s & Beretta 92FS have alloy/aluminum frames.

Ok... because Glock’s like the 17 and the 19 are not reliable and shoot poorly? You don’t need the weight of a metal frame to keep a gun steady. Your grip should do that. LOL

Small hands? CZ75 or Hi-Power.
Larger hands ? Beretta 92FS, 92A1

A 75B is horrible for people with smaller hands in DA mode. In SA they are ok. 75B variants like the P01/PCR/75B Compact are better because of the shape of the trigger and frame.

Also OP wants a gun with a rail which eliminates the CZ 75B and BHP.

You can get a Beretta 92A1 for 499 plus your transfer these days and that is a HELLUVA. Gun for a fantastic deal. 3 17 round magazines and a gun built for far more abuse then the 9mm will give it. Accurate/cheap/reliable/3 mags. Tough to find better this hot second.

OP wants all metal. Nothing wrong with that. No reason to push a G17 or whatever on them. I own and have experience with a WIDE range of small arms and a metal framed semi auto does “feel” better then many polymer counterparts IMO. Not that a Glock 17/19 is ever really a wrong answer just saying that they are not always the right answer for everyone.

Para ordnance has their tactical recon 18 round double stack magazines and a rail as well.

I was actually just talking about that pistol with a relative this last week at a Christmas party. He uses it for 3-gun; says the gun shoots great but the double-stack grip is a little too fat for his tastes. He's in the market for a single-action 9mm 1911 now.

As far as other metal-framed 9mms, I love the way the Beretta 92s feel - the grip is absolutely spacious, plus the gun is lighter than you might think because of the aluminum frame. But I just never got the hang of the long trigger. YMMV; I've seen people shoot the lights out with 92s so I know it's not the gun.
