What would you do?

Congrats. Good things come to those who wait!
Thanks, I learned patience when I was a kid and it's usually always served me well.
I'm going to refrain from making a "guys look at my new gun" thread until I've had her out a time or two and shook her out a little bit. But I will surely post some pictures , targets and overall review when I've worked with it some. A freedom arms has been a grail gun for me since I learned of their existence, around 2006 (although I would have chosen a shorter barrel if given an option).

Here are a couple pictures. still figuring out what to do with the grips (you can see they're misshapen and pretty dang ugly to my eye). Curious if there's any info on dating this gun - likely easier to just ask the manufacturer? I think it's got some age on it, not sure if freedom arms would still be putting "world's most powerful revolver" on their booklet after the release of the x frame guns. Serial number seems low but I don't know about the prefixes.

I guess there's some dust and dried grease goo in the hard to reach areas - needs a cleaning - no carbon or gunpowder, just dust and crust.

I do need to get rid of those grips. Any suggestions?
ETA: I got a good deal, $700.

Oh yes, I have a suggestion.
Since you got such a good price on the gun, you could buy a really nice set of grips and still not be into it for a ton of money.

Take a look at Rowen Custom Grips.
You will pay almost what you did for the gun, but everyone who has experience with them raves. They will be made of the finest exhibition grade wood out there and will be custom made for your hand and your firearm.
I haven't done it yet, but really want to. When I get a Bisley framed Blackhawk, a set of Rob's grips will be a priority.

Ask @MaxP or @CraigC how Rob's work is. They are the two guys that I know have experience with his stuff.

Rob's grips are first rate. They cost a premium, but they are great. Will post some photos as soon as photobucket is back up and running.

Freedom Arms guns are a different critter when it comes to grips. Due to the extreme nature of the cartridges they chamber, grips MUST be fitted to very close tolerances or they will crack. That's why you don't see any off-the-shelf grips for them.

My Field Grade came with those grips. I shot the gun less than a cylinderful with them. They're terribly shaped. It went to Rowen for some bighorn sheep. Simply put, now that his mentor Roy Fishpaw has passed on, Rob Rowen is the best there is and he's a hell of a nice guy to deal with. Not only are they beautiful and perfectly fitted but they're infinitely more comfortable than that rubber crap they came with.

Great recommendation , thanks! Looks like they run about $600, understandable for the quality but pricey. No time to cheap out now...
I wouldn't mind sinking a few bucks into this one, as a regular working man with a family I never really expected to be able to get hands on one of these guns - or wouldn't choose to sacrifice the sale of several of my others to fund it rather. I'd say confidentially I'll keep this one until my sanity or body gives up, might as well make it my own.

Yeah I was thinking on a premium firearm like that, especially since you got a good deal on it, it would be worth splurging a bit.
You would have the gun with a pair of the best grips money can buy, custom made for you, for less than the gun would cost new by itself. That's awesome.

Obturation: I can't help with dating the serial number, but don't think that style of rear sight was used on the early guns.

Thanks, all input appreciated. I really have no knowledge or experience with FA, just curious to find out what I can about this one. If I had to guess I would say it's at least 20 years old.

Congrats on this acquisition! I read a few pages in the beginning of the thread and then a few at the end... got the gist of it.

I'm also quite happy to see you're willing to invest in some custom stocks. Those on CraigC's gun are superb. Just beautiful.

Do you handload? If so, you could even plink! with this thing. Again, congrats. :)

Thanks, i've had a super redhawk in 454 for few years and do handload for it (i doubt i could afford to pull the trigger otherwise).
I'm going to get some quality grips, once the wife isn't watching. My running joke is telling her "look what i found in the dumpster" , it stopped being funny to her but i still think its a valid claim that could possibly be true.
I was just a day or two away from ordering a bfr, glad i waited though as i'm not sure i will get another chance at a FA gun under $1000+ again.
