Röhm RG-14 used in the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan.
The Röhm RG-14 is a .22 LR six shot revolver formerly manufactured and sold by Röhm Gesellschaft of Sontheim/Brenz, Germany. It is an example of a Saturday night special.

Impact[edit]
An RG-14 was used by John Hinckley Jr. in the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan on March 30, 1981.[1]

VERY poor quality. The yoke is very weak and will lead to excessive end shake, spitting lead, etc... I have an older one from my FILs dad. More of a curiosity than anything. I think the original selling price (back in the day) was $4.95 on the one I have. Depression era. Newer ones are not really any better.

Save your money... or offer him $20...

I remember seeing them for about $30 bucks or so back when I first wanted a handgun. Any handgun. A Smith and Wesson was at least $100. A Colt was a few bucks more. That hundred bucks might as well have been a million for me back then. I didn't even have a chance of ever raising that kind of money.

But Thirty bucks. Maybe....maybe...if things all worked out right, I might scrape together thirty bucks before a car repair, or doctor bill or something else claimed the money.

I never did get one. It was years before I bought my first handgun, which turned out to be a Model 19-4 Smith and Wesson. But I'm always nostalgic about those little RG-22's (and Raven 25's). I never got one, but they helped to keep the dream alive.

I saw one a couple of years ago, in NIB condition. The seller wanted $99.00 for it. I was tempted.

I believe this is the same make and model that John Hinckley used in the failed assassination attempt on then President Ronald Reagan.

At 120 dollars.... I'd want 4 or more of them.

No, scratch that, not at any price. Took me forever to sell a *free* .38.

Proof that the Germans can and in fact HAVE made garbage firearms.

Run screaming and: loose that guy's number.

Todd.

I had an RG .32 S&W Long. the cylinder was held in place by a screw in center pin. that gun was sort of cool.

The #1 gun found in the glovebox of stolen Yugos.

Now that's funny!

But seriously folks , $120? Not even close. To tell you the truth I'd pass even if the 100 part of that would be knocked off - there is just no use for that thing. Who wants to shoot total junk? I'd sooner have a Heritage.

Rohm gives junk a bad name.

I gave one to a friend a few years ago because he moved to a less than stellar neighborhood with only his bible to protect him. It was a short barrel and had the shroud. The shroud has the front sight on it, and although the gun functioned well enough, the sights were dismal and the shroud was only held on with a set screw so it constantly was backing out and the sights wiggled all over creation. I think I had $20 in it from around 2010 and this was 2012ish time frame. He traded it for a beat up single shot 12ga worth about $50 which we promptly cut down to a tad over legal length. He definitely traded up and I was happy for him. Do yourself a favor and skip this model. I’m all for a cheap but functional gun, but this isn’t a good one to jump on.

Two things about the RG 14:

1) IIRC, John Hinckley shot President Reagan with one of these in 1981. Hinckley had some kind of oddball 22 ammo that a company developed for the Sky Marshal program. I think it was meant to explode on impact, which somehow was supposed to increase lethality and reduce the chance of penetrating the skin of the aircraft (they were worried about explosive decompression). The Sky Marshals never used it.

2) There used to be somebody on this forum who knew the history of the RG 14 series. I think he said they began as blanks-only starter's pistols which underwent a quick conversion to bullet-firing for the US market. He felt this is why they were such poor guns, and that they ruined the reputation of later RG revolvers, some of which were as good as any of the cheap West German imports, like the Arminius line.

Save your money, Spend it on a better gun. Even an H&R is better.

i think i see those back in the 1970s he wants 120$ for it what gives with theseo_O
Some people collect pistols of the types used (either successfully or not) for assassinations. Hinckley used an RG14 in his attempt on Reagan. For a while I had a good collection of 'assassination pistols'; An IJ Cadet (Sirhan Sirhan), a Colt Cobra, (Oswald was killed by Jack Ruby with one) a 1911 (Squeaky Fromme, attempt on Ford) .41 Percussion Deringer (Booth)
Never had an RG14, though.
