Questions about 7.62x39 uppers on AR15s for people who own them.

I have a Rossi single-shot 7.63x39. It will not reliably fire even US ammo.

I had a PSA 7.62x39 upper. I traded it after a single range session with many malfunctions.

For all those with 7.62x39 AR's.. any accuracy results you could post up ?

Both with less expensive Com-Bloc ammo and better ammo ( Hornady )

The only better ammo I've tried in my bear creek upper is PMC Bronze fmj, I got it to group 1.00-1.25 inches and I am not the greatest rifle shot, I had it leaned up against rolled up coats/sweatshirts. It may do better with a proper rest.

The steel cased tula/monarch shoots to 2-2.5 inches, off of the same improvised rest

I have a windham weaponry with there mags, which i think are ASC mags. Works flawless with any ol cheap ammo i throw in the mag.

I'm using a Faxon midlength barrel, standard buffer, Aim Surplus bolt carrier and PSA lower. It runs like sewing machine. I also use ASC 20 round mags.

Possibly a non issue but hear me out. Years ago a company was offering an "upgraded" AK47 hammer spring. Instead of being the piano wire style spring typically found in AKs it was the AR straight wire spring, but made to fit the AK. They touted more consistent strikes, better accuracy. Well I threw one in and immediately ran into failure to fire with it when shooting regular Wolf ammo. It just wasn't strong enough to set off those tough russian primers. SO that AK upgrade got to upgrade the landfill somewhere.
So why bring that up in an AR thread?
Though the hammer and firing pins are different, and maybe significantly so, I would think it might be wise to use the best hammer spring you can find, and have an extra.

@mshootnit I have tried two different triggers in mine a milspec trigger and a LaRue MBT (which is in there now) and both have worked flawlessly.

But your post shouldn’t be without consideration, the Russian primers are in fact a harder cup, hence the reason for firing pins with more protrusion, people have developed problems with light hammer springs as well.

only shot mine (psa) a little and only with Lapua FMJ at 25 yards I have Cproducts 20 rounders which worked fine. Next trip S&B PSP and Wolf FMJ, I hope.

Recoils about like my Model 94 .30-30 shooting 150s, not unpleasant but not .223

Mine is more accurate than most it seams. If you buy the cheapest barrel you can find expect like 2 moa with wolf ammo, but it can be better with the right barrel.

I’ll have to put my scope back on mine and shoot some groups with all the varied ammo I have. I don’t believe I have any pictures of targets for that rifle. It shoots well though.

Right now mine is setup as a fun ring steel at 300 yards with a red dot and 3x magnifier. Once I get some time I’ll shoot for some current groups.

Hello all. For the people who own/built 7.62x39 ARs.

Which upper did you choose?

What mags work the best for you?

Did you encounter any/many problems with your build?

My current situation is that I am going to build an AR. I like the 7.62x39 round. Especially since my shooting will be in the close to medium range. My lower came from 80 per cent. A friend of mine who has been building and shooting ARs uses these. The lower kit I have is from PSA. The lower is set up for AR mags. I'm planning on using twenty rounders just because I find them to be handier for me.

So there the bulk of it is in a nutshell. 223 people need not apply with opinions. 7.62x39 people,......please, intrigue me!

I built my first 7.62x39 AR over Christmas. The upper was a CBC Industries and I got my Bolt Carrier group from them as well. All of this was via Christmas sales. The barrel length was 16". The lower was the multi cal Aero Precision M4E1. I put a Vortex red dot on it. Using an H2 buffer.

So far I have put about 300 rounds thru it. No failures that I recall. I am using both C Products and ASC mags. Both are working fine. I have only used steel cased ammo so far (Tula). The farthest I can shoot is 358 yards. I attached a photo of the profile target I was using. While I strung the 5 shots, they all did hit paper. I thought this was pretty good for a red dot. Note that I was aiming at the head of the target. Quite a drop at 350+ yards. (the shots are covered with the orange stickers.

Overall I am very pleased with the build. I bought a Mini 30 recently and unfortunately it just cannot keep pace (accuracy wise) with the AR build. I outshoot the Mini with my red dot AR build despite the Mini having a 1x4 rifle optic on it. Once that barrel heats up on the Mini the bullet spread expands by 3x. The AR does not seem to care if it is cold or hot. I do shoot the AR pretty wet since I am using steel case.

Mine is an AR Stoner from Midway...chosen because it was on sale for a price I couldn't refuse (and I have quite a stash of 7.62x39)...
Was pleasantly surprised with the accuracy, much better than the SKSes. At first it wasn't real reliable with my Wolf/Red Army ammo, I filed the bolt tail just a smidge to increase the firing pin protrusion and it's been 100% since then. Kept the mil-spec trigger but smoothed it out some. ASC mags seem to work the best for me.

My cheap AR Stoner 7.62x39 upper from MidwayUSA is a sleeper of a accurate AR-15. It's been 100% reliable and very very accurate. I've shot Wolf SP, real deal 8M3 ammo, the Tula 8M3 copy, handloads, and factory Federal Fusion. None of them shoot bad. My choice of them all is the Federal Fusion or my handloads with a 135 grain FTX. I've even ran the rifle over with my truck (stupid accident lol) and it still shoots very well. The lower 2 shots were at 50 yards and the higher shot was at 100 yards with no scope adjustment. received_808981376127695.jpeg

Huh.....and here I always thought that you could only run over AKs and still shoot them.

I have a PSA complete upper on an Anderson ( I think anyway, its not in front of me).
Runs like a champ, out of a couple hundred rounds no problems at all.

I run C-products 10 rounders, because I couldnt find 20's in stock anywhere...and I, planned from the start to use it for deer.

I'm leaning towards a PSA complete upper. Friends of mine who build ARs really like their products. These guys are really into it. They know that they can just buy an AR cheap now, but they really love to tinker. They're like reloaders(which a few of them are also into), it's almost more about the building than the actual using (sort of). They've been after me for years to build. I guess that even at my age, I can cave to peer pressure. Guess it doesn't help that I have been enjoying their ARs more these past few years ;).

I hope this thread starts to finally put to bed the myth that 7.62x39 AR15 are finicky and unreliable and that steel case ammo is inaccurate.

It won’t.

I’m still trying to find sometime to get out and shoot some targets with mine. I’ll post them when time allows, between work, home renovations and kids sports not much time available.

To be fair...my buddy ordered the same exact PSA x39 upper as mine...and has had issues with failure to extract...PSA has had a somewhat spotty reputation over the years, both with customer service and products....my personal experience so far has been very limited yet perfect.

Mine is also a complete PSA upper and PSA LPK with “enhanced” trigger group. The lower is an Aero Precision and the furniture is from Boyds. I have two 20rd C-Products and two AR-Stoner (ASC) 10rd mags.

So far it shoots any and all Wolf, Tula and Winchester. Very reliable. I have not fired it from a bench for accuracy however firing it offhand at the old cottonwood tree stump south of my house it averages 3” or so at approx 60 yards - stepped off.
