I know about going into Canada with unrestricted firearms, but today I spent 2 hours on the phone in 9 phone calls to the nice people in Canada without being able to get an answer . The question was about transiting to Alaska with a 450 bushmaster upper. Called Border service , the R.C.M.P. firearms line ,was transferred to Ottawa customs office ,told to call the import office then finally told to contact the chief firearms officer for British Columbia by mail. They all said ARs are restricted but it is possible got get a authorization to transport for restricted firearms to Alaska .Anyone done that or know the answer to the upper question?

What good is the Upper Receiver without the Lower, magazine(s) and ammunition?

If you have deep enough pockets to hire lawyers to defend you in Court then you can easily afford to buy a AR when you get to Alaska.

Have a relative or friend post once in while what life is like in prison and how your case is going as it works through the Courts.

Ship from an FFL in your state to an FFL in Alaska. There's no reason to involve the Canadian government if you don't have to.

Unfortunately, "just an upper" is only valid in the US, under present ATF policy. Note that what constitutes "a receiver" is under scrutiny by the 9th Circuit (yes, really, the 9th circus).

Canada is a sovereign nation, with both national and Provincial Laws of its own.

It is entirely possible that by either Commonwealth or Provincial law, the upper and lower of an AR are not distinguished--this is a question that requires some one versed in Canadian Firearms Law, and not internet voices.

Canadian laws are unique, as are their border/customs people. In my 15 years of going hunting in Canada you can get the good, bad (& ugly) border/customs people. Some know the Canadian laws other don't. More than one time we had to see a supervisor to get clearance to enter.

Personally, I would not take it. Shipping it directly to Alaska seems like a better idea.

Good Luck

Jerry

Which is why I, along with others, have suggested shipping direct to Alaska...and avoid any trouble with Canuk law.

Since Alaska is part of the United States...an AR upper....is just an upper in Alaska.....for now at least.

I suspect that if you try to bring an upper thru the Canadian Border, CBSA will partially disassemble your vehicle looking for the lower or so-called high capacity magazines (later which are prohibited items in Canada) :-(

For those that are curious, the serialized lower receiver for an AR15-pattern rifle is indeed considered to be the "firearm" in Canada too.

Yet another reason to ship direct...

Do not bother transporting firearms through Canada. Save yourself the headaches. You can mail longarms to yourself through our own U.S. Postal system. (Please note: you CANNOT mail a handgun to yourself, long arms only!)

Know the postal regulations and argue with the postal clerk in your own hometown if you have difficulty instead of arguing with the Canadian Port Authority. After all, they really do not want to see foreigners coming into their country armed with ARs any more than we want to see such a thing in ours. Please, be a good neighbor; mail the longarm before you travel. You can buy any ammunition you want for your hunt in the stores here once you arrive.

Use our postal service and enjoy the drive.
