The Infamous Ruger SR9C.... Why?

I would like to get another one. I wanted the black slide originally but they didn't have any so I got stainless. Would like a black one now

I purchased a second hand SR9C for my father. Before giving it to him, I tried it at the range. As someone who prefers Glocks to anything else, I thought the Ruger shot great. It had zero issues firing steel case Tula and Winchester. A friend of mine who is retired from SF has one he shoots on a regular basis, and he can't say enough good things about it.

TarDevil nailed it! All my other nines (Walther, Beretta , CZ, Sar) cost more and the Ruger is right there with the rest of them. I made the big mistake of purchasing a Taurus G2C, one of the worst gun buying decisions I ever made, gun lasted 4 months and I got rid of it. The silver lining to that horrible Taurus black cloud is that I took the money and purchased the SR9C. Like going from a Yugo to a Ferrari. LOL

And there it is again.
It's a good pistol....PERIOD.

I've handled and shot a bunch of those guns that are supposedly better.

I kept my SR9c with its better trigger, ergos, and flawless reliability. It's one handgun with which I'll never part.

Agree, a gun I will never part with. Over the past few months, I have spent a good sum of money. (for my Budget) buying second guns I shoot very often and like a lot. Another SR9C is on that list. I did however invest in more magazines for the SR along the way.
Personally, I believe if Ruger would produce all of their semi-Auto's with the Quality of the SR series they would be the Ruger of which I was a fan. But the SR9 is not the Same Ruger as to what they are putting out now. Other than possibly the America, which is too heavy for Civilian real world Carry. I would think any Ruger FAN now of Ruger Semi's would leap tall buildings to get hold of a SR9C. I said many times over the years, that the one complaint I had against the SR9C was the fact that it shot so mild. I felt like I would be better off shooting a 22.cal and saving the ammo. The SR9C was and is one gun I can do very well with at 25 yds.

I don't own any Ruger defensive semi-autos; do the SR, American, and Security Nine all use different magazine designs?
All three designs use different locking mechanisms for the magazines.
  • The American uses a rectangular notch offset to one side of the front of the magazine.
  • The SR series uses a rectangular notch centered on the front of the magazine.
  • The Security 9 uses a traditional notch on the front-side of the magazine, but also has an SR-style rectangular notch centered on the front of the magazine.
SR mags lack the side notch to work in the S9. However, S9 mags have the center-front notch to work in the SR9C (15-rd S9 mag is not long enough to work in the SR9).

A few years ago, I was looking for a good family "loaner" gun. The SR9 was my favorite choice out of a slew of test rental polymer nines. I thought the trigger and ergos were the best. It almost felt, to me, like a plastic Hi-Power.

So, I bought a 9E (often incorrectly called an SR9E, even by me), and have enjoyed it ever since. About the only thing I didn't like was it wasn't especially accurate.

Fast forward to this winter, and I couldn't resist the Sportsman's Warehouse $250 offer for an SR9c, even cheaper than my 9E at $300. Picked it up after a week per crappy new WA state regulations. The new gun is even better. The trigger and accuracy are improved. The c is such a soft shooter, I don't mind hanging my pinkie under the 10 round magazine. I don't think I'll be installing the extended floorplate. Only problem is, I experienced a couple of light strikes. I cleaned the striker channel; it had a lot of grit in it. I'll take it out to the range again soon to see if that solved the problem. Also, I'm curious to try the standard 17 round magazines without the SR9c grip extension, and see if they are viable backup magazines.

The first SR9 I bought 10 years ago had a lot of light strikes during its first range session, but after cleaning the grit out of the striker channel it ran flawlessly. One of my sons now owns it.
Being a first year gun, I paid $430 for it at a gun show. These recent $250 - $300 sales are a HUGE bargain for such a nice pistol IMO.

The SR9c is a nice pistol, but for concealed carry the Kahr CW9 is my preference. It is substantially more compact.... with less ammo capacity of course. One of my new SR9s will be the HD pistol in the nightstand, the other will be a gift.

That's what i thought too when I went to buy my SR9c. All they had was with the stainless steel slide and so I bought that one because I really wanted this gun. Have been very pleased with the one I got and don't miss not having the black nitride slide version.

I got an email from Kentucky Gun Company this morning. They're selling them for $250. I already have a Glock 26, HK VP9SK and M&P 2.0 subcompact so I’m set with guns that size, but $250 is tempting.

Not to derail the thread, but what about the S&W SD pistols? Like the SD40? I hear nothing but great things about them, and that they are every bit as good as the M&P line.

SD40 or SD40VE?

One of the guys that owns an SD9VE just bought an old SW9VE Sigma and thought the Sigma seemed to be higher quality. Of course the SD9VE has a little lighter and shorter trigger. I think the SD9 trigger was different than the the SD9VE. I have only owned the SW9VE so.don't have any direct experience with their offspring.

I'm very happy with the trigger on the M&P M2.0.

The “VE” line. Dunno what “VE” stands for, but I hear nothing but good things from a few guys that have them.

VE = Value Enhanced.

I picked up a SD9VE a few weeks ago used for $250 at gun shop with box and 2 mags.
Added a $50 Apex trigger & spring kit to it and find I really like it.

Similar in size to a Glock 19. With the Apex trigger, I can consistently hit what I'm aiming at.

That being said, if any of you see a SR9C on sale for $200 with cheap shipping, let me know!! I'd grab 2 off them.

I think $249.99 is the floor right now but who knows.
