Nice looking piece. I bought one sometime in the early 90's and my wife used it as her EDC for years. Still have it. It's a solid pistol that has never failed. I've shot a bunch of +P through the M85 with no problems.

Not sure what Taurus recommends but I shoot 5 +P rounds through my 85UL every month when I rotate my carry ammo. Other than that I stick to 158 SWCs loaded to normal specs.

That information would be in your owner's manual.

This 85 belongs to my mother-in-law, but I borrow it pretty frequently during concealed carry courses. I had to do major reconstructive surgery to make it safe for use several years ago, including transplanting and timing a new cylinder, but the effort paid off and it runs like a top.

Love the grips

What is +P? the definition has varied.
My SS Taurus 85 from the early 90's was +p rated for that era.
I mostly shoot standard 38 spl through it and carry +p in it that I sometimes shoot, it has been a good gun for all these years and has never had a malfunction.

Nice find! I have owned three Taurus 85's. They all went bang every time. One had a truly excellent trigger.

I found that regular 38 special and +P tended to shoot to the same POA, so I practiced with milder stuff and carried +P.

There are plenty of Taurus bashers out there. Some have gotten bad Taurii, were disappointed, and you really can't blame them.

OTH, Taurus has been making the Model 66 and Model 85 derivatives for a very long time, and you don't find many complaints about them. I have owned three of each and have had no problems with any of them.

Ironically, several months ago I let my FiL have my Model 85 Ultralight for next to nothing because I happened upon good deal on a S&W Model 642, and of course those are "better". My FiL has been shooting the Taurus trouble-free ever since. My next trip to the range will let me know for sure if I have finally repaired all of the damage that Bubba did to the S&W. :)

I have occasionally used +p in mine, over the past 25 years or so, with no ill effects - to the gun, at least.

That is a straggly qualified *yes* in the linked manual for +P in an 85.

I don't bother even stocking in +P for concern of it filtering into a non+P revolver but it's good to know.

Todd.

View attachment 882960 Just picked taurus 85 stainless bobbed hammer mint condition.38cal. Can it take plus p??

It probably can take some +p, but why?

In a short barrel, non-alloy .38 I've come to like the Buffalo Bore 150grn wadcutter standard load. I think it would do just fine.

It ain't cheap but there's no question of whether it gets enough velocity to expand from that short barrel.

It doesn't need to expand...

The Plus P designation came about in 1971-72. Since then the standard allowable pressure has not changed. Maybe reloading manuals have changed max loads, and maybe the factories load them lighter than they could, but the standards remain
