Anyone have experience with a new S&W 9MM M&P jamming on the first cartridge of a 10 cartridge mag? Repeatedly. Two different magazines. Over the counter ammo.

A friend just bought one.

Thanks for hints of what to do.

Try different ammo (although I doubt that is the issue) my .40 Compact M2.0 doesn't have any issue with fully loaded 13 and 15 round mags.

Know anyone with a 15 (M2.0 Compact) or 17 round mag so you can try it to see if it's a problem with the 10-Round Mags or the pistol?

But everything is fine if downloaded by one?
If so fully load the mags and leave them like that when not in use. The springs will relax some, regardless of what the "springs never lose a bit by being compressed" crowd trys to tell you.

Just to clarify. It Jams when you fire it on loading the second round when it's loaded 10+1 correct?

If it's jamming (not returning to battery) when attempting to manually load the first round make sure you are sling shotting it with authority. A lot of people are wishy-washy and slow the slide velocity which can cause issues especially with brand new pistols.

Also you are loading the initial chambered round from the mag not dropping it in the chamber correct?

Sorry if these questions seem elementary. It's just hard to diagnose over the internet.

If this is the case I suggest not jamming a full 10-round mag in with a full chamber. There may be too much pressure against the slide from the top round and it’s short-stroking.

If it is only the first round out of a full magazine causing issues, it is most likely a stiff spring issue, in which case use, and leaving them loaded for a while will help remedy. Let us know how it goes after trying a few suggestions you've received.

What type of jam? Is it a jam after firing the first round or trying to chamber a round before firing?

I had this problem with a Remington R51 (among other problems)

The type of ammo did make a difference. FMJ or round nosed HP like Remington “Ultimate Defense” helped. Try different ammo with different bullet shapes.

The restricted 10 round magazines for double stack guns are built with very little slack in the ammo column so you cannot offend your leaders by cramming in an 11th round. This makes them difficult to seat under a closed slide and can lead to malfunctions as the top round drags on the slide under heavy spring load. I had a real mess the other day trying to get a full capacity magazine to +1.

So have your guy try loading only 9 under a closed slide or 10 only at slide lock.

Thanks, all.

I plan to take my friend to the range with me soon.

Following your good suggestions, I expect we will return with the issue solved or with a clearer description of the problem.

'Til then, thank you for the suggestions.
