Questions about 7.62x39 uppers on AR15s for people who own them.

I have the PSA 16 inch with PSA lower and it has been reliable from day one. I also just received a BCA 10.5 upper. It also has been reliable and quite accurate.

Here is a 10 shot group with wolf 125 SP with my psa

Steve
Here are two five shot groups at 200 yards using a vortex red dot 2x magnification out of my AR 7.62x39. The first is Tula 122 gn FMJ and the second is WPA 124 gn FMJ. Both steel cased.

The first group With Tula is about the size of your hand if you spread your fingers out. The second group was a little lower than the Tula except for two fliers. those are probably my fault. No failures while I put 60 rounds thru it yesterday.

For all those with 7.62x39 AR's.. any accuracy results you could post up ?

Both with less expensive Com-Bloc ammo and better ammo ( Hornady )

Never really tried to shoot mine for groups, when we zero'd for deer season, we simply called it Bambi accurate at 100 yards. I did fire a few rounds on steel at 200 (12 in gong).

Put one together from PSA kit on a PSA lower last night for a Bud. Only issues were me related.

I would really like a "Shell Shrinker" in .32 rimmed and .32 ACP for a "M43" upper. No savings in cost but low power option with out special reloading.

I’d just get the PSA or bear creek complete upper you want whenever it goes on sale. I’ve got both, both are great!

If I were doing it all over again, I’d think about the PSA47 or whatever they call the AR configured to take AK mags. Mags are the weakness to the 7.62x39 ARs, you might get 4-5 rounds to feed reliably in a regular pmag if you are lucky. The cproducts mags are much better, but still not full proof.

I’m not a huge fan of the Midway AR-Stoner brand however I read some good reviews on their 10rd 7.62x39 AR mags which have turned out to function well for me.

the follower is marked ASC.

Another crucial piece is a picture of the groups you shot with it to show your friends what your “junk commie round” can do in a good platform.

Like this, 20 rounds 50 yards, ~2 moa:

Think I'm going to go this route. If I didn't already have the lowers, I would've gone the 47 route.

I have a .32ACP converter from MCAce, and both the converter and my extractor got beat up using it. I keep my .32ACP conversions to bolt rifle use now.

As for the x39 AR; the weakest point is the bolt head rim. It's thinner than a .223's rim (shown on the right).

How do the 7.62x39 models that use standard AR lowers compare to models like the PSA KS-47 that take AK-47 magazines? Any reliability or bolt durability differences? Or is it just a matter of deciding whether you prefer to use a stand lower or want to use AK mags.

Makster. I never used one of those psa rifles. So i have zero experience with them. I would say they would be just as reliable as a standard lower with a asc mag. Unleds they changed, the psa’s are not chromed lined. Thats a big no for me with the 762x29 round.

My personal rifle has been 100% reliable with c-products mags over several hundred rounds and you can't get more reliable that 100%. There is no difference in bolts between the two so no durability difference. The big advantage to me using a standard lower is that it has last round bolt hold open and I use the same lower with a 223 and a 358 yeti upper. The only advantage I see with the KS-47 lower is if you already have a bunch of ak47 mags or really want to use 30 round mags.

the psa’s are not chromed lined. Thats a big no for me with the 762x29 round.

Unless you are using old surplus ammo with corrosive primers I don't really see an advantage to chrome lined. Since the surplus ammo has all but dried up most people are shooting new manufactured tula or wolf ammo which is not corrosive. If you do really want a chrome line barrel I believe Green Mountain offers one.

Someguy. I happen to have a huge pile of that ammo i am slowly burning up. So it was a requirement for me. But i got my windham before i knew about the psa’s. For the price of them. Could get it just to burn the barrel up and have fun doing it.

Sure. One of the nice things about an AR to is if you completely trash the barrel you can replace it along with a new gas tube and bolt for $150-200 and your back in business.

I went with a standard lower because I am cheap and did not have a pile of AK magazines laying around.

I have my pass around Sally Lower normally set up with a 5.56 upper, Other than stock color it is exactly like the HD rifle so no difference in controls, I like using a .22 conversion BCG in that upper (no it is not as accurate as even a cleaned up 10/22, but fun) and to the best of my knowledge no one makes a faux AK mag that would work with my .22LR conversion BCG. I may one day like a 9x19 upper for playing with or even training other folks with and again don't know anyone that makes an AK mag based mag adaptor. I might consider a .300 BO one day and guess what? (the magazines ain't AK)

Also I have seen few (OK, No) inexpensive 20 round AK mags and I like shooting from tables and prone.

Unless I was to write about something that would get my post clobbered by a moderator and is beyond highly unlikely, I have great difficulty imagining a personal need for more than my four C-Products defense 20 round magazines.

So being cheap and lazy (remember I like to shoot from a table or laying down) the standard lower was for me.

BTW I just checked PSA and a completed AR47 lower is $50 more expensive than the complete standard lower I use and $60 more costly than the cheapest complete Standard lower... two and a half to three C-prod or ASC 20 rounders right there....

Colt upper on RRA lower w/ 4x Leupold. That's about a 1.1 inch group with SST handloads at 100 yards. I don't shoot steel. Brass case only.

I also have a "Superbolt" as backup.
