I am getting ready to begin reloading for 45-70. I have a Hornady case trimmer. Can someone help me and tell me which pilot will work for the 45-70 shell? It looks like they do not make one for the 45-70 so I wonder the 45 caliber one will just do the trick. Thanks Pete

Question for you... have you measured your cases, and do they really need trimming? What are these going into, by the way?

The .45 pilot will work, Pete. If you have any Hornady .45-70 brass, you'll find they're quite a bit shorter than any of the other brands. I put those aside and load them as a batch when I have enough to mess with.

Hope this helps.

Fred

I Agree with fred, the .45 pilot works just fine.... i have put all the hornady brass i got in storage.... bought star line and really have fun with my guide gun... enjoy

Thank you. I will be starting with new Starline brass. Just getting everything ready so I am not scurrying around down the road. Pete

What I meant by my questions... if you are loading them in a single-shot, as I do, case OAL is relatively meaningless. If you are putting them in a lever-action, I could see where OAL would come into play with the crimp.

I don't know that I've ever trimmed a single piece of .45-70 brass...
